2019-20 Premier League – Sunday 29th December Matches Tips and Betting Preview

There are three matches to round off the decade in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and evening as the top flight moves into the second half of the campaign with some of the best sides in the country in action.

We have the best two sides in the league in action over the course of the day while three of the chasing pack for places in the top four are also on show and if that is not enough we have the surprise package taking to the pitch as well so Sunday is nicely set up.

Arsenal vs Chelsea (14.00)

The action all begins at the Emirates Stadium where Mikel Arteta will have his first home match as Arsenal boss when his new side take on London rivals Chelsea in a match which could have plenty of implications in the race for the top four.

Arsenal could be forgiven for wanting revenge here after their demise to the Blues in the Europa League final at the end of last season but more importantly they need a good showing and a good result to boost their current position. Chelsea are going well if you look at their league position, but they have just been flattering to deceive a touch in recent times, so they too will want something convincing looking just to prove their worth once again.

I’m expecting to see some goals here. Chelsea are dynamic in attack and they can make the Arsenal defence look stupid, although that isn’t too difficult it has to be said, but going the other way you would expect Arsenal to get plenty of joy going at a Chelsea back line which hasn’t shown much solidity in recent times. Over 3 goals will do me.

Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers (16.30)

The second match of the afternoon sees the leaders Liverpool looking to continue what looks like a march to the title when they host a side who did them a favour on Friday night in the shape of Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.

Liverpool are seemingly not for stopping this season, indeed only Manchester United have taken points away from them this term, but Wolves don’t fear anyone and have a decent record against the better sides, as they showed on Friday night, and they will be looking for the points for their own quest in the chase for a spot in the top four at the end of the season, something that is beginning to become more and more realistic as the season goes on.

I’m expecting to see goals here too. Liverpool are a free scoring side whichever combination they adopt in their front three but there is a vulnerability to them at home and Wolves are a very good side on the counter attack. We saw on Friday night that Wolves can be caught out at the back a little more this season when they are at full strength but you’ve got to think Nuno will be forced to make changes here. I still see them offering something on the counter so over 3 will do me here too.

Manchester City vs Sheffield United (18.00)

The final Premier League match of 2019 is not actually live on UK TV but it comes from the Etihad Stadium where the champions Manchester City will look to bounce back from their defeat on Friday night when they host Sheffield United, for whom this is a free hit.

City are pretty warm favourites to win this match but they are going to be without their goalkeeper Ederson which could only make a weak looking defence at the best of times even weaker so it will be interesting to see what Sheffield United are able to offer in this match. The Blades have been decent against the better sides in the league this term with draws at Chelsea and Tottenham and a win at Everton which is never an easy place to go. If you forced me into a bet I’d take the goals in this one but I’m happy to sit this one out as I prefer the first two games from a betting point of view.
