2019-20 Premier League – Thursday 2nd July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The latest round of matches in the Premier League concludes on Thursday evening when a couple of big clashes take place, one which sees egos collide and the other which could well have a huge say in the race for the Champions League spots.

The action begins with the match that neither side can afford to lose if they are to keep their top four hopes alive while the second match sees the former champions and the new title winners collide in a quality looking clash.

Sheffield United vs Tottenham Hotspur (18.00 – Sky Main Event/Sky Premier League)

Two sides who have had very different seasons overall meet to open up the double header at Bramall Lane when Sheffield United host Tottenham Hotspur with a win the only commodity either can afford in what should be a competitive match.

To be fair to Sheffield United, for all their excellence prior to lockdown, where a Champions League spot looked theirs for the taking, they just haven’t got going after the restart and their campaign looks to be fizzling out tamely, which is a shame. Lockdown came at the perfect time for Tottenham. They were an absolute mess before it but have come out of it in much better shape and if teams above them start waiting for them, they could yet get themselves heavily involved in the Champions League race. That has to start with a win here however.

I’m with Tottenham here. There has never been many goals in this Sheffield United side but they were always able to combat that with a solid defence but they don’t look anything like as tight at the back and while Spurs aren’t the most fluent attacking side known to man, they have enough quality to get into the Blades’ defence. The way these two have come out of lockdown it is hard not to see an away win in this one.

Manchester City vs Liverpool (20.15 – Sky Main Event/Sky Football)

The big match of the night might not have anything on it other than bragging rights anymore, but in terms of quality it should be the match of the season so far as Manchester City host the newly crowned champions Liverpool in a clash between by far the two best sides in the league.

Sometimes these overly hyped up matches disappoint but that hasn’t been the case when these two have collided in recent campaigns and I don’t see it being so here. Liverpool have won the league but they will still want the points record. City currently have that and will be looking to take three of the possible total the Reds can achieve so I’m expecting a high quality clash here between two teams who will be eager to beat the other.

That says to me that we are going to get goals here. City are generally relentless attackers on their own patch but Liverpool will surely fancy their chances against this home defence. There is no reason for either side to look to contain here. It isn’t in their natural instincts, it isn’t what they are best at so hopefully this lights up from the off and we’re treated to a great game. That’s what I expect to happen so over 3 goals will do me fine here.
