Big Matches

The televised action kicks off the afternoon as the race for promotion to the Premier League takes another step when West Bromwich Albion host Fulham in a battle of two sides who will be looking to be in with the elite again next season. West Brom start out five points ahead of Fulham so a win here eliminates the Cottagers from the automatic race. If Fulham win they are right back in the mix so this is one of the biggest matches of the campaign so far.

Best of the Rest

There is a battle royale at the bottom of the table to avoid the drop and a number of sides involved in that fight are in action on a big night on Tuesday. Bottom of the pile Barnsley don’t play until Thursday so second bottom Luton have the chance to pull away from them and out of the bottom three when they host a QPR side whose fans are not impressed with their recent form. Hull City are third from bottom and they travel to a Wigan Athletic side who are actually bottom of the table themselves when their 12pt deduction is applied. Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough sit two places above the drop and they head to Sheffield Wednesday and Reading respectively. In the race for the final play-off spot Cardiff City host Derby County in a key match while two of the chasers meet at The New Den when Millwall host Blackburn Rovers.

Betting

We are getting to the stage of the season where bets are few and far between and as such I’m only going with one on Tuesday. It comes in the relegation battle at the DW Stadium where Wigan Athletic take on Hull City in a match which it goes without saying that both teams need to win. If you apply the deduction for going into admin for Wigan Athletic they are bottom of the table and three points from safety, with Hull City the team they are chasing to get out of the danger zone.

The Championship hasn’t been a division for home teams since the restart but Wigan are playing a different game to the rest because they have been fine on their own patch while everyone else has been struggling, the top three aside. Since lockdown Wigan have played Blackburn, Stoke and QPR at home and won all three and haven’t conceded a single goal. Their only defeat in 12 either side of lockdown was at Brentford the day after it was confirmed they went into admin so they’re in decent nick. Hull have picked up one point in three away games since the restart but worrying they have shipped nine goals to add to the five in their last road trip before the shutdown. They’re a poor side who can’t seem to stop conceding on their travels. I expect Wigan to take advantage of that.
