2019-20 Sky Bet League 1 – Coventry City vs Tranmere Rovers Tips and Betting Preview

The League One weekend concludes in a Championship venue on Sunday afternoon when Coventry City host Tranmere Rovers at St Andrew’s, their temporary home for this season, in a match which both sides will be eager to win.

The two sides are at opposite ends of the League One table at the present time so their need for the three points is very much for different causes. That should at least ensure we get a competitive match.

Coventry City

The Sky Blues will be looking to bounce back from spectacularly surrendering their unbeaten start to the season last weekend. They went down 4-0 at Rotherham on a day where nothing went right for them but in a way that will be easier to dust themselves down after than if they had lost in the final minute. They remain unbeaten at their new home and that is a run they will be looking to extend here if they can.

I’ve admired Coventry from afar for a while. They have been in the same division as my team Luton for the last couple of seasons and have offered a good footballing philosophy during those times even though off the field they have been something of a shambles. Nothing has changed in either regard this season even though some big players have exited the club in that time. Coventry should be considered promotion candidates this season for sure.

Tranmere Rovers

When a side is promoted in successive seasons there will naturally become a time when they hit their ceiling and if the start to the campaign is anything to go by then Tranmere might have hit theirs. It was always going to be a tough step up to make but it wasn’t helped in the slightest when they failed to hang on to goal machine James Norwood and an inevitable struggle has taken place as a result of that.

It might be that the Merseyside outfit grow into their work but if that is to be the case they are going to have to stop shipping goals. They have only won two matches all season and one of those was against Bolton at the time which it hardly counts. They dropped into the bottom three on Saturday so there is a need for a result for Micky Mellon’s men here but it isn’t going to be easy to pick up three points on the road given that they’ve only picked up one point in five matches away from Prenton Park, scoring just two goals in that time.

Team News

Both these sides are missing players due to suspension. Coventry City will be without defender Kyle McFadzean after his dismissal at Rotherham last week while Tranmere Rovers will be missing Conor Jennings after he was sent off against Shrewsbury last week.

Tranmere are actually without a host of players for this match. Jordan Ponticelli is unavailable as he’s only loan from Coventry while Neil Danns is on international duty. David Perkins, Morgan Ferrier and Mark Ellis are just three of nine players Tranmere have out injured.

Betting

I like Coventry City here. I was considering the over but when you look down the list of players that Tranmere are missing there is no need to overthink things. Micky Mellon’s side are heavily depleted for one of the toughest games of the season given the way Coventry are performing at St Andrews right now.

There is every chance the Merseyside outfit are getting the Sky Blues at the wrong time as well because I’m sure they’ll be smarting by what happened to them last season and will be eager to make up for that here. This is a talented and exciting Coventry side and they look to have the beating of injury ravaged Tranmere in this one.
