2019 Abu Dhabi Championship Golf – Round 3 Betting Preview

The Abu Dhabi Championship has reached the halfway mark and with two rounds to go in the tournament we are set for a fascinating finish to the first Rolex Series event of the year. The third round on Friday is ‘Moving Day’ where the picture could become a lot clearer.

We have a wonderful top of the leaderboard heading into the third round and there are some really big names one low round away from propelling themselves into contention so Friday should be a fascinating day of golf.

Round 2 Recap

Shane Lowry saw his lead cut by two on Thursday but it is still him who holds the lead at the halfway stage. He sits on 12 under par and leads two South Africans in Richard Sterne and Louis Oosthuizen by a single shot. Our outright bet Lee Westwood is another shot back on 10 under and then there is a quartet on nine under par. Soren Kjeldsen, Tom Lewis, Ian Poulter and Scott Jamieson make up that set of players.

It wasn’t the best of days for us betting wise on Thursday with our only success coming in the Joost Luiten group. He won that for the second day in a row by a pretty comfortable margin but sadly Thomas Pieters’ -2 wasn’t enough to win his group and Martin Kaymer stalled with a level par round which was a bit disappointing.

Friday Betting

There is a market up for the third round leader but much like the second round on Thursday there are a few options for who could lead at the end of the day so I’m not too keen to get stuck into this market. There is something that tells me that Lee Westwood is primed to make his move on Friday but that will suit me fine anyway as I’m on him outright and I don’t really see a need to get involved with him once again. Given that is the case I will head to the two balls for a punt.

Friday 2 Balls

Those who made the cut are now out in two balls for the third round on Friday with the last group out onto the golf course of Shane Lowry and Louis Oosthuizen going out at 08.50 GMT and the penultimate pair of Richard Sterne and Lee Westwood out at 08.41. The headline pairing in the third round is the US Open and USPGA champion Brooks Koepka and Thomas Pieters. They set off at 07.33 while defending champion Tommy Fleetwood and Mike Lorenzo Vera go off at 03.42. My bet comes from the final group.

Louis Oosthuizen vs Shane Lowry

Match tees off at 08.50 GMT

Two European Tour stalwarts head out onto the course in the final group of the third round when Louis Oosthuizen continues his search for a second win this season when is he paired with Shane Lowry on Friday.

I have to say I think Oosthuizen is a very good thing in this match. I say that because Lowry has hardly hit a fairway all week and while everything he hit out of the rough turned to gold on Wednesday, the Irishman won’t keep scoring low unless he finds some fairways. Only four men have hit more fairways than Oosthuizen over the opening 36 holes and only three have hit more greens in the right number too. Oosthuizen is comfortable being out last in big tournaments and I expect him to win this two ball.
