Day Session

Milos Raonic vs Miomir Kecmanovic

The opening quarter final sees the big serving Milos Raonic taking on the lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic, a man making the most of his second chance in the tournament, having reached this level of a Masters 1000 event for the first time.

Experience would certainly be with the Canadian in this match, but although he came past Jan-Lennard Struff on Wednesday, he was second best for much of the first set before somehow winning it. He should kick on from here but having not lost a set in the tournament to date Kecmanovic merits a little bit of respect even though on all known statistics and rankings it is hard to make a case for him. I’m still tempted with the outsider with the 4.5 game start but if ever there was a trappy match this is it so I’ll tentatively give this one a swerve.

Night Session

Gael Monfils vs Dominic Thiem

The second quarter final of the tournament sees the in form Gael Monfils taking on the Austrian star Dominic Thiem for the right to face the winner from earlier in the day in the last four on Saturday afternoon.

Monfils had to battle hard to come through his first match this week but since then he has been unstoppable and near enough flawless, not dropping a single game in two of the four sets he has played. Thiem has looked every bit as good as well so we should be in for a decent match here between two extremely entertaining players.

Thiem leads 4-0 on the head-to-head record between the two and in the two most recent matches ‘La Monf’ hasn’t even got close to him. Monfils is in fine form right now but Thiem has been drifting all day and he is now at a price which is too big to ignore in what isn’t much worse than a 50:50 match up. If anything Thiem should probably be favourite so at 11/8 he’s my call here.
