2019 ATP Miami Open Tennis – Day 3 Betting Preview

The big names enter the ATP Miami Open at the Hard Rock Stadium on Friday as the seeded players join those who made it through the first round for the second round of the second Masters 1000 event of the year.

We’ve seen some decent tennis so far this week already and with the world number one Novak Djokovic and the Indian Wells champion Dominic Thiem headlining proceedings on Friday we should be set for much more good stuff.

Stadium Court

The women’s number one Naomi Osaka gets the action underway on the main court but when the men come out to play it is the turn of the defending champion John Isner to get his title defence up and running. He faces the Italian qualifier Lorenzo Sonego with the other match from the men’s draw on the main court seeing Novak Djokovic look to put his Indian Wells disappointment behind him when he takes on Bernard Tomic.

Grandstand

The men feature first on the second court when Kei Nishikori looks to kick his 2019 into life when he takes on the Serbian battler Dusan Lajovic in a match which could have plenty of long rallies and mileage in it. A women’s match follows that but all eyes will be on this court for the second men’s match of the day when Nick Kyrgios goes up against Alexander Bublik in a match which has the makings of being a volcano waiting to explode! The final match on this court sees Dominic Thiem begin his quest for the Sunshine Slam double when he plays the competent Hubert Hurkacz.

Court 1

There are three matches on court 1 on Friday with British eyes being locked to the first of them when Kyle Edmund takes on Ilya Ivashka in a match the Indian Wells challenger winner should be looking at winning. Borna Coric is up after them when he takes on Roberto Carballes Baena with the final men’s match of the day being an attractive looking one between Lucas Pouille and Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Best of the Rest

There are plenty of big names and good matches scheduled for the outside courts on Friday with Gael Monfils and Fabio Fognini competing in matches on the Butch Buchholz court. Roberto Bautista Agut, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Gilles Simon and Milos Raonic are among the other big names who are taking to the courts on Friday.

Betting

I’ll go with three more over the course of Friday where there are a couple of outsiders that I like and one match which could be closer than is slated to be. Federico Delbonis is one of my outsiders that I like. He looked decent enough beating the big serving German Peter Gojowczyk in the first round and should have no problems getting on top of the John Millman serve. Millman is a strange one. He is seeded at this level for a rare occasion but probably could have done with the extra match coming in here because he looked ordinary against Jan-Lennard Struff in Indian Wells last week. Millman beat Delbonis in Australia but conditions here are much slower which should allow the Argentine into the match and into the next round.

Lucas Pouille has not been past this stage of a Masters 1000 event since Paris in 2017 so having taken a chance on him having a big week in Indian Wells last week where he was absolute pony I’m going the other way here and taking him on with Albert Ramos-Vinolas who had a good first round win earlier in the week and who should enjoy these slower conditions much more. The Spaniard looks to be finding a groove with a couple of good wins over Damir Dzumhur and Marco Cecchinato in Indian Wells last week and in these conditions he looks like a good bet to me.

Hubert Hurkacz looks to be coming along nicely at the minute and I think he can push Dominic Thiem deep in their match. Thiem will be full of confidence after his Indian Wells success but conditions are much different here and while he will like them eventually it could take him a few games to adjust. Hurkacz has already had a good win in Miami and looks to be hitting the ball very smartly. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes Thiem the distance here but having played out a 20 game match with Roger Federer in Indian Wells last week, the Pole can take this beyond 21.5 games.
