2019 Australian Open Tennis – Day 3 Betting Preview

The second round of both singles draws begin on day three of the Australian Open while on the minor courts we also see the beginning of the doubles events on another extremely busy day of tennis at Melbourne Park.

We are still waiting for our first enormous shock in the tournament and Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber and Rafael Nadal are among the stars looking to avoid being it over the course of Wednesday’s play.

Rod Laver Arena

The former US Open champion Sloane Stephens gets the action underway in the main stadium. She takes on the Hungarian player Timea Babos before the home star Ash Barty takes to the court once again. Her opponent is Yafan Wang of China. The day session then concludes with the defending champion Roger Federer taking on the British ace Dan Evans for a place in the third round.

Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber has the honour of leading off the night session on the Laver Arena. She faces Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil before Rafael Nadal looks to make it into the third round when he takes on the Australian player Matthew Ebden, who shouldn’t lack for support at that time of night.

Margaret Court Arena

The ninth seed Kiki Bertens will open up the show on the second court. She faces the former seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for a path into the third round before the Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson takes on Frances Tiafoe in a match which could have plenty of game time. Defending women’s champion Caroline Wozniacki concludes the day session when she faces Johanna Larsson in a Scandinavian battle.

There is a good night session on this court as well and it gets underway with the Australian number one Alex de Minaur taking on the Swiss qualifier Henri Laaksonen before the former champion here, Maria Sharapova rounds off the third day of the tournament when she takes on Rebecca Peterson having not lost a game in the competition so far.

Melbourne Arena

There is a good looking match on the third court to get things going as Anett Kontaveit takes on Aliaksandra Sasnovich before the beaten finalist from 12 months ago, Marin Cilic is back on court. He faces the American Mackenzie McDonald with the day session concluding with Aryna Sabalenka looking to continue her rise in the game when she plays the British ace Katie Boulter for a spot in the third round.

There is one match in an earlier night session on this court where Roberto Bautista Agut will probably have the crowd against him for a second match in a row when he takes on the Australian player John Millman who had such a good US Open campaign last year including that fine win over Roger Federer.

1573 Arena

Caroline Garcia heads off the action on the 1573 Arena on Wednesday. She faces the Australian wildcard Zoe Hives before Jordan Thompson goes up against the extremely capable and competent Andreas Seppi. The pick of the matches on this court appears to be the third one as Gael Monfils goes up against Taylor Fritz to end the day session.

There is just the one match in the night session on this court and it sees former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in action when she takes on Irina Begu, who has been much higher ranked in the past than she is now but who still should not be underestimated by the Czech star.

Best of the Rest

Court 3 will be popular with those with ground passes or watching at home on the various streaming options available in this tournament. Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up play on that court while Grigor Dimitrov concludes it. Donna Vekic is on in between then too. Tomas Berdych and Karen Khachanov are among the players playing out on Court 8 with Fernando Verdasco among a decent looking schedule on Court 26.

Men’s Betting

There are plenty of short priced favourites in the men’s draw on Wednesday but I like two bets. Fernando Verdasco generally doesn’t perform to his best at this round of a Grand Slam so he has to be vulnerable against Radu Albot who to be fair to him gives it his all whenever he is on a big court. You would expect the Spaniard to come through, and I do expect that, but to think he is a certainly to win in straight sets would be a little folly. He’ll have a meltdown at some point or the Moldovan will have a strong spell. I like over 3.5 sets in that match.

Roberto Bautista Agut looked to be cruising past Andy Murray in the first round but then for 2.5 sets he was getting outplayed by a man with one hip. The crowd will be right behind John Millman in their second round match and we only have to think back to New York for what the Australian can do on the big stage. Millman has the game to hang around and if the first round is anything to go by, the longer he keeps the Spaniard out there the better his chances are of winning. I fancy the home man can pull off a shock here.

Women’s Betting

Just the one bet catches my eye in the women’s draw on Wednesday. Aliaksandra Sasnovich looks to be hitting the ball very sweetly and I think she can power Anett Kontaveit off the court. Sasnovich was a semi-finalist in Sydney last week where she beat Daria Kasatkina along the way while she also beat Elina Svitolina in Brisbane so she is going along very nicely at the minute. Kontaveit is an improved player over the last few years and may well break into the top 20 at some point this year but she doesn’t convince me on these stages yet. I’ll take the Belarussian here.

Daily Accumulator

We were one away from landing our accumulator on Tuesday but not to be defied we will go again on Wednesday with another set of games which we think can combine nicely to deliver a decent enough pay out.
