The quarter finals of the Australian Open begin on Wednesday when the bottom half of the singles draws plays down to the semi-final stage on the Rod Laver Arena on what looks like being another heavy day of tennis.
The tournament has cranked up a notch in the last couple of days and there is every chance it will go another level on Tuesday as we head towards the business end of the opening Grand Slam of the new season.
Day Session
Roberto Bautista Agut vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
After a legends doubles match the day session begins with the first men’s quarter final when Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas with the winner potentially going up against Rafael Nadal in the semi-final.
Both these men have had amazing runs in this tournament. Bautista Agut has had to serve three deciding sets while Tsitsipas came of age in a huge way when he came through that epic tussle with Roger Federer on Sunday so both have a story to tell when they are finished with this event. That said, both have a massive opportunity ahead of them here.
I’ll be interested to see how Tsitsipas goes here. It is so easy to forget the magnitude of both his performance and his win over Federer and backing up such an emotional high is never easy. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a flat performance from the Greek, who after all is pretty inexperienced at this stage of tournaments still. Bautista Agut might have some heavy legs but he knows how to manage himself and can maintain his level over a long period. I think he’s the value here.
Anastasia Pavyluchenkova vs Danielle Collins
The women’s match in the day session sees the two remaining unseeded players in the tournament colliding when Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova takes on the rapidly rising Danielle Collins for a place in the semi-finals on Thursday.
Both women had huge wins in the previous round. Pavlyuchenkova came from a set down to Sloane Stephens to cause a massive upset while Collins took Angelique Kerber to the cleaners and should be full of confidence from that so from a form ground this one looks pretty tight it has to be said. I’ve got this one as a pick ‘em and I wouldn’t be surprised if this goes three sets but at the same time if one of them gets on a roll they could easily blow the other away so I’m reluctant to get involved here.

Night Session
Petra Kvitova vs Ashleigh Barty
The night session gets going with the second women’s quarter final when the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova takes on the home star Ashleigh Barty for a place in the semi-final against the winner of the earlier clash.
Both these women have looked extremely good in this tournament so I’m expecting a very competitive match here, one which I would be surprised if it isn’t three sets and pretty lengthy in keeping with many of the matches in the women’s draw this year. I’m already on Barty to win this match at 9/2 having backed her to win the quarter before the tournament started. I would back the Australian if I wasn’t already on her but there is no need to have two bets on the same match so I’ll let that quarter bet ride.
Frances Tiafoe vs Rafael Nadal
The final match of Tuesday’s action sees the American next-gen star Frances Tiafoe taking on a Rafael Nadal who is probably an overwhelming favourite to make it through to the final now should his body hold up that long.
Tiafoe has done wonderfully to make it to this stage having beaten Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov en route but it is hard to see where he has the weapons to live with Nadal in these conditions. Nadal has only dropped 33 games in his four matches in this tournament and only gone beyond 10 games in a set twice. His wins over Alex de Minaur and Tomas Berdych were very daunting indeed.
The evidence suggests that Nadal will win this in straight sets but the 4/9 on that isn’t exactly going to make us rich so it might pay to be a little more exotic in which case under 30.5 games could be the way forward here. Six of the 12 sets Nadal has won this week have been 6-2 or easier. One of them in this match gives enough wiggle room for the other two sets to be played out under this number.
