We are all set for a Super Saturday at the Lakeside Country Club as the BDO World Championship continues on the penultimate day of the event. We have the women’s final to look forward to as well as two fascinating men’s semi-finals.
The world number one Lorraine Winstanley has made it into the women’s final and is the favourite to land the title while the defending men’s champion, Glen Durrant, is one of four quality players left in the men’s draw.
Lorraine Winstanley vs Mikuru Suzuki
The women’s final is the opening match of the day on Saturday with Lorraine Winstanley battling the Japanese star Mikuru Suzuki over the best-of-five sets for a first world title for both. Were Winstanley to win the title she would do the Winmau World Masters and World Championship double which would be some achievement.
These two women have made it here in different ways. Winstanley has been pushed to a decider in two of her three matches and that would have been all three had Trina Gulliver not missed a raft of doubles against her, whereas Suzuki has motored into this final without dropping a set yet, despite some high calibre opponents.
It has taken Suzuki a while to get going in all three of her matches so the extra length on the format could just suit her in this final. Winstanley hasn’t really shown her best scoring form this week yet and I think she’s going to have to score well to win this final but there is something about the Japanese player that makes me think she’ll hold her nerve, get better as the match goes on, and run out the winner.
Scott Waites vs Michael Unterbuchner
The opening semi-final in the men’s draw sees the former champion Scott Waites looking to book his place in another World Championship final when he takes on the man who came up short in this round last year in Michael Unterbuchner.
Both men came through great scraps in their quarter final victories on Friday. Unterbuchner had to endure a tiebreak in the final set to see off Willem Mandigers while Waites outlasted Conan Whitehead to make it through to what should be a good tear up between these two classy throwers.
I like Unterbuchner as a player. I think he’s got a bit about him but he plateaus a little too much for my liking and as a result I think Waites can win this and do so with a bit to spare. Waites is scoring brilliantly this week and while his finishing has left plenty to be desired, it is getting better by the match. If he checks out well here he’ll outscore the German enough to win.

Glen Durrant vs Jim Williams
The number two seed takes on the third seed in the second semi-final on Saturday evening when the defending champion Glen Durrant takes on the extremely good Welsh player Jim Williams for a place in the final on Sunday.
These two met in a truly epic quarter final showdown last year when Williams had Durrant on toast at 4-1 only to miss darts to win the match and ultimately end up losing 5-4. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if the Welshman gets his revenge for that defeat here because he is throwing some fantastic arrers, but someone is going to have to throw close on a 100 average to take care of Durrant now and that might just be beyond Williams.
Nevertheless, I expect this to be a titanic showdown with no quarter given and I’m all over 8.5 sets in it. I really think we’ll go the distance in this match with both men on, or very close to, their very best form. Durrant averaged a shade under 98 in his quarter final and for six sets Williams was on or around a ton average. 6-3, 6-4 or 6-5 is very possible here.
The two hit 23 180s in their epic match here last year and when you factor in Williams hit 13 180s on his own on Friday night there has to be every chance that a 19.5 180 line will be covered. Both men have ploughed in the 180s throughout the tournament and that is set to continue here.
