2019 British Masters Golf – Round 3 Betting Preview

We have reached the halfway stage of the British Masters at Hillside Golf Club and on Saturday those who made the cut will look to take advantage of ‘Moving Day’ to get themselves into position to win one of the most prestigious tournaments on the European Tour so far this year.

10 shots separate first to last heading into the second half of the tournament and with the wind set to get up on Saturday literally anything can happen from here on in and anyone can win the event from here.

Round 2 Recap

After two rounds of the tournament it is fitting that a Brit is out in front. Matt Wallace holds a one shot lead on 12 under par with a group of four another shot back. They include regular Tour winner Ross Fisher as well as Richie Ramsay, Thomas Detry and Niklas Lemke with Marcus Kinhult another shot back on 10 under. Overnight leader Matthew Jordan sits on nine under and then comes our pre-tournament pick Lee Westwood, Victor Dubuisson and Max Kieffer on eight under. Tournament host Tommy Fleetwood and defending champion Eddie Pepperell are both on seven under, five back from Wallace.

It was not the day we wanted from a betting point of view on Friday. Tom Lewis actually shot lower on Friday than he did on Thursday but annoyingly his three under total for the round was bettered by Aaron Rai even though the latter had no chance of making the cut so there is plenty of work to do in the match betting over the weekend.

Saturday Betting

We do have a third round leader market priced up but the problem I have with getting stuck into it is you would think that the tournament is now at the mercy of Matt Wallace and it is up to him to determine whether he leads after 54 holes or not. I’m not sure I would want to be on anyone in that group a shot back, maybe with the exception of Detry but he is priced accordingly and anyone beyond that and we are probably getting a little too far back for comfort. I’m tempted to have a little nibble at Eddie Pepperell at 35/1 but I’m going to keep my powder dry and hope that Westwood can have a good day to fire him right into contention.

Saturday 2 Balls

The remaining players in the field are now out in two balls over the weekend with the last group out onto the golf course being Matt Wallace and Niklas Lemke. They are off the first tee at 13.20 BST with Ross Fisher and Thomas Detry nine minutes before that. Marcus Kinhult and Richie Ramsay go out at 13.02. The pick of the third round groups might just be the Ryder Cup teammates Lee Westwood and Victor Dubuisson who could light up the course from 12.44. I’m going with the one bet on Saturday.

Marcus Kinhult vs Richie Ramsay

Match tees off at 13.02 BST

The third last group out onto the golf course sees the emerging Swedish player Marcus Kinhult out alongside the experienced Scottish star Richie Ramsay in an intriguing blend of young and old. Both men are right in contention here and will be looking for a big third round to enhance their position.

Prior to last week in China, Ramsay hadn’t had a single top 50 finish on Tour this year with his three third rounds before his effort last week being 76, 75 and 78 so it is this day where he has been going pear shaped. Even last week he could only shoot 70 on the Saturday which isn’t ideal. Kinhult has been a missed cut machine in recent times but when he has made the cut he has generally gone well.

The Swede has only made two bogeys this week which has been good scoring. That shows that he isn’t making many mistakes, unlike Ramsay who has a number of bogeys on his card even though he has made more birdies. In the tougher conditions here the extra control Kinhult looks to have could be the difference.
