2019 Cheltenham Festival – Gold Cup Betting Preview

The final day of the Cheltenham Festival and the highlight of the week is the Cheltenham Gold Cup.  This looks a strong renewal with last season’s winner Native River bidding to retain his crown.

Favourite

Half of the last 20 winners were 2nd season chasers and that includes the current favourite Presenting Percy whilst three-quarters for those winners ran in either the King George or the Savills over Christmas.

8 of the last 10 winners won last time out and 9 of those started at single figure odds.

Presenting Percy has won at the last 2 Festivals so he fully deserves his place at the head of the market.  He won the Pertemps in 2017 and the RSA last year but has only been seen once this year, winning over hurdles in the Galmoy.

Contenders

Native River was 3rd in the King George and, despite winning this last year, has something to prove in a stronger renewal.  His price is a little short.

Clan Des Obeaux was the King George winner and has since won the Denman Chase but has been turned off as favourite here on 3 occasions so there have to be question marks over him producing his best form on this track.

4th in the RSA here 2 years ago behind Might Bite, Bellshill has a chance but was behind Kemboy in the Savills.  He did however win the 4 runner Irish Gold Cup last time out.

Of the rest, Elegant Escape ran in a handicap 2 starts ago so has to improve, Al Boum Photo must jump better, whilst Thistlecrack and Might Bite have an age trend to overcome with no winner in the last 20 years being 10 or older.

Betting

Kemboy is a second season chaser and has won his last 4 including the Savills over Christmas.  He generally jumps well and has improved markedly for the step up in trip.  He’s now a 7 year old but has been here for the last 2 Festivals where he’s yet to trouble the judge but nor has he disgraced himself.  He looks to tick all the trends boxes and is my idea of the most likely winner.

Tips

Back Kemboy (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 12.00 Betfair Sportsbook (⅕ odds 1-4)
