2019 French Open Tennis – Day 3 Betting Preview

The first round of the second Grand Slam of the year concludes at Roland Garros on Tuesday when the remaining players yet to get their French Open singles campaigns started get the opportunity to do so out in Paris.

I say it concludes but much of that could depend on the weather, which sadly is not set to play ball with rain forecast later in the afternoon and even some thunderstorms in the offering. Hopefully they miss Roland Garros and we get a decent day of action in.

Day 2 Recap

It was a pretty simple day for most of the big names on Monday although one or two either struggled or had to come through tricky tests. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic both breezed into the second round of the tournament but Serena Williams survived a scare when she dropped the first set before coming through. Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka also dropped sets before progressing but Caroline Wozniacki didn’t have the same luck. She lost out in her first round match.

It was an up and down betting day for us on Monday. Annoying Jo Konta won her match but didn’t do it easily enough to cover the handicap while Nikoloz Basilashvili wasn’t at the races at any stage. We did get the majority of the losses back when Pierre-Hugues Herbert came from two sets down to dump out Daniil Medvedev though so it wasn’t a complete disaster.

Philippe Chatrier Court

We have some big names on the main court on Tuesday and the first of those is ATP Tour Finals winner Alexander Zverev. He begins his quest for a first Grand Slam with a clash against John Millman before the world number one Naomi Osaka takes to the court. Her tilt for a third straight Grand Slam begins against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. The defending champion Simona Halep begins her title defence with a tricky test against Ajla Tomljanovic before the action on the main court concludes with the leading home hope Gael Monfils going up against Taro Daniel.

Suzanne Lenglen Court

There is a crackerjack of a match to open up the proceedings on the second court as the Lyon finalist Nicolas Jarry takes on fellow South American player Juan Martin del Potro before Caroline Garcia will look to give the home crowds something to cheer about when she collides with Mona Barthel. Another French player is third up on this court when Lucas Pouille is on show. He faces the competent Italian qualifier Simone Bolelli before the former US Open finalist Madison Keys begins her quest for a maiden Grand Slam when she faces Evgeniya Rodina.

Simonne Mathieu Court

There is a seriously good card of action on the new court so hopefully the rain stays away. Two Italians go at it first up when Monte Carlo winner Fabio Fognini takes on countryman Andreas Seppi before the former champion Jelena Ostapenko meets Viktoria Azarenka. Improving eleventh seed Aryna Sabalenka then takes on the pocket rocket Dominika Cibulkova. The final match of the day on this court sees the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino taking centre stage when he goes up against the qualifier Stefano Travaglia.

Best of the Rest

As you would expect there is a number of big names on show around the grounds on Tuesday. Russian duo Daris Kasatkina and Karen Khachanov are on show out on Court 1 while Maria Sakkari is on show on Court 14. Fernando Verdasco, Ivo Karlovic, Monica Puig and Daria Gavrilova are just some of the other names that are worth a watch over the course of the day and into the evening.

Men’s Betting

I’ll take the one bet in the men’s draw on Tuesday in the hope that the rain doesn’t spoil the schedule. It comes in the match between Fernando Verdasco and Dan Evans which I think will have plenty more games than the total line of 33.5. Evans is a pugnacious character who isn’t likely to go down without a good fight here while Verdasco is ticking along nicely on a clay surface that he is relatively comfortable on. Verdasco will be awkward for Evans to beat with his left-handed style opening up Evans’ backhand but I would expect the Brit to know what’s coming. Even if Evans does lose this I think he’ll keep sets close and maybe even nick one and that should see the over 33.5 games fly in.

Women’s Betting

There is only the one bet for me in the women’s draw as well on Tuesday. That comes in the form of one of my outright bets in Anett Kontaveit, who I think can see off the challenge of Karolina Muchova relatively comfortably. The Czech is still relatively new to the scene at this level and while she is competent on clay, the Estonian is a different level entirely. I’m expecting Kontaveit to get on top of her opponent pretty early in this match and unlike some we have seen this week I fancy she’ll complete the job. I’ll take Kontaveit to cover 2.5 games.
