2019 French Open Tennis – Day 9 Betting Preview

We will know the quarter final line up for both the French Open singles draws by the conclusion of play at Roland Garros on Monday when the top halves of both events play down to the last eight stage in Paris.

This tournament has cranked up a notch in the last couple of days and there is a feeling that it could be set to be elevated even further on Monday when some tasty tussles take place on both the main show courts.

Day 8 Recap

We had the match of the tournament by far on Sunday when Stan Wawrinka outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in what was a five-hour epic which was eventually decided deep into a final set. While that was going on there were routine straight set wins for Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer while over in the women’s draw Sloane Stephens and Jo Konta powered into the last eight with convincing victories.

We made a slight amount of profit on Sunday with that Wawrinka victory. Sadly although Petra Martic won her match she didn’t get going quickly enough and allowed Kaia Kanepi to win the first set which was a little disappointing but we’ll be hoping to build on three winning days in succession on Monday.

Philippe Chatrier Court

There is a real good looking women’s match to start us off on the Philippe Chatrier Court when Sofia Kenin looks to back up her win over Serena Williams when she meets Ash Barty before Novak Djokovic takes to the main court. He has a meeting with Jan-Lennard Struff and then comes the match the home crowds will be salivating for. That sees the beaten finalist of 12 months ago, Dominic Thiem, going up against Gael Monfils in what should be an absolutely belting contest. Simona Halep closes the show when she faces the Polish player Iga Swiatek.

Suzanne Lenglen Court

It is the women who start off proceedings on the second court too and we get going with Katerina Siniakova looking to continue her good run after beating Naomi Osaka on Saturday. She meets Madison Keys before the men come out to play on this court too. Kei Nishikori and Benoit Paire come back out to finish off their match from Sunday and then Fabio Fognini plays Alexander Zverev in what looks like a juicy contest before Karen Khachanov goes up against Juan Martin del Potro before two unseeded women bid for a place in the quarter final when Amanda Anisimova faces Aliona Bolsova.

Betting

I like three bets over the course of Monday with the first of them coming in the women’s draw where Sofia Kenin still isn’t getting enough credit. She demolished Serena Williams on Saturday and while it is never easy to back up an emotional win, she seems the sort of person who has a determination to allow her to do it. She faces Ash Barty who is a different test to Serena in what her movement will be better but whether she’ll be able to cope with the clean hitting of the American remains to be seen. The Australian might well come through this match but I’ve got to think that Kenin will remain within 4.5 games.

After that I’m going to put my money where my mouth is on Fabio Fognini. He has looked very good in this tournament so far which is catching my eye because I’m on him outright in a section where Novak Djokovic isn’t firing on all cylinders so I’m hoping for big success from the Italian. Before that comes along he has to beat Alexander Zverev, something that he did on his way to the title in Monte Carlo earlier in the season. Zverev hasn’t looked at his best in this tournament and has twice chucked away two set leads and been forced to go the distance. I’ll whisper it quietly but Fognini appears to fancy the job here and he can see off the German.

I also can’t afford a small punt on Gael Monfils to see off Dominic Thiem. I seem to have opposed Thiem for most of the tournament so far but he isn’t convincing me, unlike Monfils who has cracked the ball nicely for most of the tournament and whose movement and entertaining style makes him a potential superstar in the game. The French are desperate for a winner of this tournament and the way Monfils is hitting the ball it could very well be him. Whether that happens remains to be seen but I do believe he is overpriced to win this match.
