2019 Mzansi Super League – Tshwane Spartans vs Paarl Rocks Tips and Betting Preview

The race for the top three places in the Mzansi Super League is about to intensify, beginning with the Friday match which sees the third placed Tshwane Spartans taking on the table toppers Paarl Rocks in a juicy looking battle.

The Rocks are looking in excellent form at the minute but the Spartans could be the sleeper of the competition given the amount of matches they have had affected by rain so far this term, so there is plenty of intrigue in this one.

Tshwane Spartans

The Tshwane Spartans have had three of their first five matches in the tournament yield no result but the two matches which have been completed have both resulted in wins for the Spartans and with the weather clearing up, they will be looking to showcase their talents over the remainder of the competition. Any side that has AB de Villiers in their ranks is going to be dangerous over the course of the piece, and he hasn’t really fired yet which spells trouble for someone.

It is pretty hard to judge the Spartans statistically in terms of the fact that they haven’t had many matches reach a conclusion, but they appear to be in decent form with the bat, and loaded with runs, but there is a vulnerability with the ball with three of their main bowlers going for nine an over or more. That might just be the short sample size though, so that should probably be treated with caution.

Paarl Rocks

The Paarl Rocks have won their last three matches to hit the top of the table but their one defeat in the campaign came against the Tshwane Spartans which is something of a concern for them coming into this match. You would think the recent outings will mean they put that bad day at the office behind them, but at the same time it is something for us to consider here. It was their one bad bowling display of the competition so there could be a little in that.

The reason why they are in decent form is they have three batsmen in good form and each with more than 100 runs for the competition to their name. They also have four regular bowlers who are conceding seven an over or less and that is never a bad combination. The ones who go for more than sevens had their stats skewed by the Tshwane Spartans so you would think they are better than the numbers and will want a bit of payback here.

Betting

I’ve liked the Paarl Rocks all competition long and I’m not about to come away from that, but I do respect the Tshwane Spartans. I say that not just by looking at their personnel or anything but also the fact that they probably haven’t shown their full worth yet given the lack of opportunities they have had to do so. With that in mind, I’m wary of getting stuck into the match betting so I’ll look elsewhere for a bet.

That comes in the form of the total runs where 325.5 could be a slightly low line. When these two met in Port Elizabeth both sides scored more than 180 in a high scoring game and here at Centurion I expect the runs to continue to flow. This is usually a ground full of runs. It isn’t the biggest playing surface and we are at altitude as well. The outfield is usually a carpet and so all things being equal I think we’re going to see a high scoring match. I’ll take the over.
