2019 Premier League Darts – Week 16 Betting Preview

It is the final night of the regular league season in the Premier League Darts tournament on Thursday with the action coming from Leeds where four men will battle it out for the last two spots in the semi-finals at the o2 Arena next week.

If that battle wasn’t enough to have us entertained throughout the evening, top spot in the table is also up for grabs on the final night so among the four matches there is plenty of intrigue and interest which should lead to captivating viewing.

Gerwyn Price vs Peter Wright

The evening opens up with Gerwyn Price looking to put the cat among the pigeons in the race for the o2 when he takes on Peter Wright to kick the action off. Price knows he has to win and hope that either Mensur Suljovic or Daryl Gurney loses later in the night to make it in.

He has probably picked the right opponent to go up against too. I saw that because Wright has really struggled in this Premier League campaign, although he was in better nick in the European Tour event at the weekend. It will be interesting to see if Wright sticks with the same tools for once. Price is expected to win this because he needs to win it but I’m far too long in the tooth to think must win equates to will win. I don’t really fancy anything here although Wright could be a bit of value playing with freedom.

Daryl Gurney vs Michael Smith

Daryl Gurney will then look to force his way into the top four when he takes on Michael Smith in the second match of the evening. Smith is playing for nothing while Gurney has to better Mensur Suljovic’s result or win by more than the Austrian does to pinch fourth place.

I like Gurney here. I think he is becoming a real big match player and he will want to be at the big party next week. He has the scoring power to live with Smith and can take advantage of the missed doubles that have been coming from the arm of the Englishman a lot more regularly than we are perhaps accustomed to. A draw may well be enough for Gurney though so I’ll play him on the draw no bet market just in case he settles for the draw at any point.

Michael van Gerwen vs Mensur Suljovic

In many ways the biggest match of the night is the third one on the card as Michael van Gerwen in second takes on Mensur Suljovic who begins the evening in fourth spot but who may not be there by the time he starts out in this match.

Someone is going to be disappointed here. It will either be van Gerwen as a defeat would mean he can’t finish top of the table while Suljovic probably isn’t going to hold on to fourth place without picking up anything from this match. With that in mind, I expect this one to be very competitive but ultimately MVG has more than a slight edge on the Austrian. Whether that transmits into a win big enough to cover a handicap remains to be seen but I would expect the Dutchman to win here.

James Wade vs Rob Cross

The final match of the night is likely to be huge for Rob Cross as he looks to top the table for the very first time, something that is widely considered as quite an achievement. He takes on James Wade who is likely to be confirmed in the top four ahead of this contest.

You would think Cross will have to win this to secure top spot but Wade backs down for nobody and will probably secretly love the idea of winning this match and getting another crack at Cross next week rather than take on MVG in the semi-final. I don’t really have a strong feeling either way here but Wade might just match up badly to Cross. We don’t really know how this is going to go and what is on it given all that could happen on the night so I’ll sit this one out but I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Wade come out on top here.
