2019 Royal London One Day Cup – Middlesex vs Sussex Betting Preview

The Royal London One Day Cup continues with one match on Saturday which comes from the South Group and could well have big implications on who might qualify for the knockout stages and who may not.

Middlesex host Sussex at Lord’s and the good news is that the match is live on Sky Sports. The other good news is that after early rain the forecast for the match itself isn’t too bad so we should be in for a decent day of cricket.

Middlesex

I had a hunch that Middlesex would go well in this competition and backed them for the South Group accordingly before a ball was hit in the event. I’ve not been proved wrong either with them winning three of the opening four matches. Their only defeat was at Hampshire, who to be fair to them are looking absolutely awesome at the minute so there is no shame in losing to them.

Middlesex have been decent enough with the bat when they have had to be but their success has come with the ball, with a high quality seam attack being supported well by a couple of spinners who have risen their game this season. Ross Taylor coming in adds an experience that everyone can feed off so the Seaxes look pretty good at the present time.

Sussex

You have to give credit where it is due to Sussex. They have also begun the campaign well, winning their opening two matches before a surprise and I dare say annoying defeat to Somerset last time out. They lost it when the rain came but in truth they were losing whether it rained or not from the game position at the time it was called off. There’s no shame in losing to them either as they are undefeated thus far.

Their two wins are of a slight concern though. They came against Kent and Surrey and those two counties have just one win in nine matches between them. Sussex’s batting looks at least one genuine batsman light to me and now England are coming for their bowlers their resources are going to be tested from here on in.

Team News

Stuart Law is keeping everything fresh so Nick Gubbins and Steven Finn have a rest here. Max Holden and Tim Murtagh return to the squad and are expected to play although Ethan Barber is another option.

Sussex will be hoping that Luke Wright has overcome the illness which kept him out against Somerset and he can play here. Chris Jordan has left for England duty though so Ed Barnes has been brought in on loan from Yorkshire and could debut here.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of this match. I like Middlesex here. I’ve pinned my colours to their mast throughout the competition and I’m not deserting them just yet. They have played some great cricket and even the absence of Eoin Morgan didn’t stop them against Surrey. Sussex look too light with the bat for my liking and with Jordan away you wonder whether they will cut the mustard at the death of the innings too. Everything is going nicely for Middlesex at the minute and they can take a giant step towards the knockout phase with a win here.

David Wiese has caught my eye with the bat for Sussex this term. We saw at The Oval on Thursday that Middlesex have the new ball attack to get stuck in early and that someone in the middle to lower order could be in position to top score against them and Wiese would certainly tick that box. He clobbered 92* in his only real innings so far in this competition against Surrey last week and has made 139 and 51 against the red ball this season as well so he’s clearly hitting the ball well. He might not be chasing much of a score here so given that his is scoring nicely I’ll pay to see how he goes at 10/1.
