2019 Scottish Open Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The Scottish Open, the third tournament of the Rolex Series, concludes at The Renaissance Club on Sunday as a host of top players do battle for a prestigious title in its own right and a seriously large pool of cash.

The week so far has been about honing preparations for The Open next week but that will all change on Sunday where it is all about contending to win the tournament or take a decent cheque away from it for those not in contention.

Round 3 Recap

At the end of the third round of action it is Bernd Wiesberger who takes a two shot lead into the final 18 holes as he searches for a second title in the season. He sits on 20 under par, two ahead of Erik van Rooyen who is the only player within four shots of the Austrian. Romain Langasque and Nino Bertasio are the next pursuers of the man who won the Made in Denmark event earlier in the season with a group of five players on 15 under, five off the lead, headed by Matt Wallace. Henrik Stenson and Matt Fitzpatrick sit a further shot back and could yet launch a charge from there.

It was a profitable day for us over the course of Saturday with Jamie Donaldson firing his way up the leaderboard in fine style to bring in his two ball against Darren Fichardt. Sadly Lee Slattery couldn’t keep the bogeys off his card to bring in the second punt but that was the lower stake of the two bets so profit was secured.

Sunday Betting

I was hoping that we might get a without Wiesberger market priced up for this final round as I’m not sure the Austrian is going to get caught over this final round but there isn’t one. There is enough juice in the each way terms to take a chance on someone at a huge price to break into the top three and land some place cash and then maybe have a shot at the big bunce should the Austrian fall into difficulty at any point.

With Erik van Rooyen a notable struggler on a Sunday, especially when in contention and when in the final group, it could be that there are two places in the top three up for grabs. I can’t say either of the pair on 16 under are all that convincing either so in essence Tyrrell Hatton might only need to make up two shots in order to make the top three. He is no stranger to going low on a benign links course over the weekend having won the Dunhill Links twice and he finally came good on Saturday. There are still improvements left in his iron play but if he can dial in a few wedges the rest of his game has looked good this week and he could be capable of that 63/64 to force himself into a place at a massive price.

Sunday 2 Balls

I will complement that punt with a look at the Sunday two balls too where the last pair out onto the golf course will be Bernd Wiesberger and Erik van Rooyen who don’t actually go out until 15.58 BST. Romain Langasque and Nino Bertasio are out 10 minutes before then with one of the more high profile pairings going out onto the golf course at 15.08 when Henrik Stenson sets off alongside Matt Fitzpatrick. There are many other good groups to enjoy over the longest day of golf of the year in terms of end time. There is one bet I like here.

Bernd Wiesberger vs Erik van Rooyen

Match tees off at 15.58 BST

The last group out onto the golf course is the one which has my betting interest among the two balls as Bernd Wiesberger takes on Erik van Rooyen in which isn’t quite a match for the title but it isn’t too far off it given the current order of the chasing pack.

Wiesberger has caught fire over the last two rounds, shooting 16 under for the 36 holes and he’ll go into this final round as one of the leading putters in the field but with no real sign of weakness in his game. Van Rooyen sits second but there were signs he was beginning to fight himself at times on Saturday and while credit must go to him for battling on and staying in contention you get the impression that it is only a matter of time before he unravels again. Wiesberger has a great temperament, he has the confidence of having won this season and looks in great touch. I’m amazed he’s odds against versus a man with notable Sunday struggles. I’m happy to get on though.
