2019 Specsavers County Championship – Derbyshire vs Glamorgan Betting Preview

There is a full set of Specsavers County Championship matches next week with the bulk of them beginning on Monday, however there is one which gets going on Sunday and it sees Derbyshire taking on Glamorgan in the second division.

Both teams have outperformed the expectations that would have been on them heading into the red ball season and with a sustained run in this competition having arrived, each of them will be eager to play consistent cricket and begin to pick up positive results.

Derbyshire

With a win and a draw from their only two matches in the Championship to date, you would have to say that this has been a good start to the season for Derbyshire, however it will count for little if they don’t take advantage of the run of matches they have to come. There is no distractions now for two months so we will find out whether that start was a flash in the pan or whether they are going to challenge for a lofty position this term.

Derbyshire had a competitive One Day Cup campaign so they would be carrying a fair bit of confidence into their return to the Championship with them. A number of their batsmen found form against the white ball and they might have found some belief in their attack in that tournament as well so it will be interested to see how they play here and whether they take the game to their opponents.

Glamorgan

It has been a fair start to the red ball campaign for Glamorgan too. When you consider that they were emphatic winners of the wooden spoon last time, and heavy favourites to keep hold of it this time around, two draws from their opening two games is by no means a disaster, and actually offers the sort of platform for them to build from over the next however many weeks.

What has been very encouraging is that in two of their three completed innings this season they have put up more than 450 runs. If they can keep that level of run output going then there is no doubt in my mind that they have the quality in their bowling attack to take 20 wickets so there is no reason why the Welsh county won’t be able to start picking up wins in the coming matches.

Team News

Derbyshire have named a 12 man squad for this match with overseas player Logan van Beek in it along with Tom Lace who performed week for Middlesex last week. Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen have been in the runs this season.

Glamorgan have a doubt over captain Chris Cooke after he missed the final couple of days of the draw with Gloucestershire while Marchant de Lange and Timm van der Gugten are being rested. Michael Hogan is in the squad though.

Betting

If Glamorgan had a first choice bowling attack out or if Michael Hogan had shown us some form this season then I might have chanced them at odds against in this match but the fact that de Lange and van der Gugten are not playing here and we would be taking Hogan’s form as guesswork it is hard to get involved with the visitors.

In saying that though, there are runs in this Glamorgan side so I’m not sure I want to be backing Derbyshire at odds on. I guess there is a strong chance of the draw in this one anyway with the way both teams are batting so the best thing to do is to sit this one out and save our money for any better opportunities which appear in Monday’s games.
