2019 The Masters Snooker – Judd Trump vs Kyren Wilson Betting Preview

The first round of The Masters concludes on Wednesday with the final two matches of the opening part of the draw being played inside the Alexandra Palace on the day. The action begins with a grudge match in the afternoon session between Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson.

These two began their rivalry in this tournament last year when Wilson came from the clouds to beat Trump in a deciding frame in the semi-final and there have been plenty of words exchanged since then so there should be a nice edge to this one.

Judd Trump

You could be forgiven for thinking that the war of words and things that have been written about Judd Trump have spurred him on to win titles. He landed the main prize in the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast and has generally had a decent enough season, which could easily have seen him win another tournament or two with an ounce more luck.

He now returns to the scene of where it all went wrong for him last year and it will be interesting to see how he copes with that. To be fair to him, he rarely plays badly here but sometimes runs into some pretty special performances, although with only the top 16 players in the world in this tournament I guess you have to expect that in the main.

Kyren Wilson

Although he had already won a ranking tournament, I get the feeling that it was that comeback win in the semi-final here last year that catapulted Kyren Wilson onto a new level as a player. Even though he went on to lose the final to Mark Allen, he definitely came of age and has challenged in a number of tournaments since then, including the Paul Hunter Classic which he won earlier in the campaign.

There is no weakness in Wilson’s game. If there was one thing you could level at him it is that he hasn’t won one of the sport’s big titles yet but they will surely come. He almost landed the Champion of Champions earlier in the season but lost a deciding frame final to Ronnie O’Sullivan. The more he gets to those stages though the more comfortable he will feel and the titles will begin to roll.

Head to Head

If we include their Championship League meetings these two men have met on 12 previous occasions. It is definitely that semi-final here last year that was the biggest one of those battles which Wilson won in a deciding frame. In all they have six wins each but Wilson has won the last four meetings between them in proper tournaments, including three over this distance. Everything about their record is very tight, including their frames history, which stands at 43-42 to Wilson.

Betting

Two great scorers meet in what could be the match of the first round so the obvious bet is to get on the attack and take over 1.5 centuries. I remember a match between Trump and Robertson here a few years ago that had something silly like five or six tons and this could go on that path too based on their history.

They met in three best of 11 matches in 2018 and the last two covered this line and the first one would have done but for a miss on 96. Trump is scoring better than he was back in that match, Wilson ups his game against Trump so we’re set for a classic which should contain at least a couple of tons.
