2019 The Masters Snooker – Mark Williams vs Neil Robertson Betting Preview

Tuesday looks like a wonderful day of snooker at The Masters and it begins with the world champion Mark Williams taking centre stage when he takes on a former champion at the Crucible Theatre in Neil Robertson.

Both these men have tasted success in this tournament so the magnitude of the tournament will be well known to the pair of them. Both men enjoyed plenty of success in 2018 and will be looking to kick 2019 off with a bang.

Mark Williams

All eyes will be on the world champion Mark Williams in this match. He has been enjoying his world title success in the first half of the season but the big names often come to the party in the big arenas and there is no bigger than this one. I sense Williams will knuckle down and look to be extremely competitive in the second half of the campaign, beginning here.

In many ways there is no point in looking at Williams’ season so far. By his own admission he hasn’t been dedicated or taking it seriously so it is a sign of how good his game is at the present time that despite that, he has still lifted a title this term. We saw in Sheffield that the big tournaments are very much back within his compass so he should not be overlooked.

Neil Robertson

The Australian has also tasted success this season already which takes the pressure right off but his win was in a lower key event and he would love to get his name on a title of this magnitude once again. Robertson wasn’t here last year due to his off-table problems so he will be relishing the chance to compete in this fine arena once again.

The big difference in Robertson’s game this term is his scoring is back to how we know it can be. That suggests, as he has eluded to, that he is able to spend more time on the practice table and with that should come wins and eventually plenty more big titles. He still runs into some insanely good performances but I would rather that than him go out of tournaments because he hasn’t played very well.

Head to Head

These two have met on 22 past occasions and it is very much Robertson that has had the better of their battles. He has managed to pick up 14 victories with Williams coming out on top on just five occasions. They have also drawn three matches in the old Premier League. Williams did win their last meeting in the 2017 European Masters though which might count for something. Robertson leads 73-47 in frames so given that he’s won nine more times his margin of victory isn’t always big. His will be their third meeting in The Masters. Robertson has won the previous two.

Betting

It is hard to see anything but a close match here. In fact, when the draw came out I had pretty much every match in the bottom half of the draw as being close and I certainly think we are going to start out that way with both men coming in here off the back of a title in the season already and completely au fait with the conditions and the surroundings.

Both these players can get in from distance and make frame winning breaks and both know their way around the tactical side of things. You would think Williams will mop up the scrappier frames and Robertson the more open ones. However the match pans out though over 9.5 frames looks to have more than an even chance of landing.
