The first round of The Players Championship is in the books apart from one putt to be struck on Friday morning, which means that the field embark on the second round with those who didn’t go well on Thursday looking to fare better in order to make it in for the weekend.
Drama is guaranteed around this golf course and with players jostling for a high position on the leaderboard and to make the cut we are set for plenty of that over the course of what should be a great day on Friday.

Round 1 Recap
At the end of the opening day it is our pre-tournament bet Tommy Fleetwood and Keegan Bradley who head the field on seven under par. They lead by one from Byeong-Hun An and Brian Harman with a trio of players on five under headed by Rory McIlroy. Former winner Kevin Kisner is on four under while two more of our outright bets sit on three under in Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter.
It was an up and down day for our bets on Thursday with Billy Horschel winning by a couple of shots to land his three ball but Matt Fitzpatrick going down by one to lose his. Xander Schauffele had the early lead after six holes but a bogey on the par 5 derailed him and ended up being one which might have got away from us.
Second Round Leader
There is an early market for the second round leader but if I’m honest I’m struggling to find a selection. Keegan Bradley is the only one of the front four out in the morning on Friday so I wonder if that will suit him, but around here nothing is secure and I would certainly want plenty of value if I was getting involved in the market.
With the wind likely to get up once again in the afternoon it is hard to put much faith behind those who are out in the second wave of matches. That only really leaves Bradley but he’s too short so I’ll head to the three balls for my betting over the course of this second round and hope that Fleetwood can have another good round and get himself into a strong position.

Friday 3 Balls
The field is out in the same groups that it went out in on Thursday but the waves are switched so the afternoon starters on the opening round go out in the morning here and vice versa. That means in the morning the Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson and Patrick Reed group will get the centre of attention while in the afternoon the Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar will form much of the profile of the event. I’m going with two bets but they come from other groups on the course.
Keegan Bradley/Si Woo Kim/Andrew Landry
Match tees off at 12.22 GMT
The first group I’m interested in comes in the morning wave of matches when the co-leader Keegan Bradley heads back out alongside the former champion Si Woo Kim and Andrew Landry having beaten both by eight shots on Thursday.
Given the beating that Bradley gave his playing partners on Thursday I’m more than a touch surprised we can still get odds against on him here. I don’t know whether it is because bookmakers haven’t cottoned on to Bradley going better with the short stick or not but whatever it is he looks a big price. He spoke well in his post-round interview and is hitting the ball extremely well. Kim seems to be hit or miss here while Landry looks bang out of form. I’ll take Bradley in this one.
Billy Horschel/Bryson DeChambeau/Bubba Watson
Match tees off at 17.38 GMT
My second bet will come in the afternoon session of action and it is a repeat of what I took on Thursday when Billy Horschel is out alongside Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson in an all-American trio.
Horschel beat DeChambeau by two and Watson by three on Thursday and off the tee and putting wise there is much more to come from him. That isn’t the case with DeChambeau who was statistically very good in the opening round but couldn’t score. This isn’t Watson’s track one little bit so I’m happy to swerve him. I expect more from Horschel off the tee here which should help him score even better on Friday than he did on Thursday. With that in mind the 2/1 on him to win this three ball once again appeals.
