The quarter finals of the US Open come to a close on Wednesday with the other four matches take place out in New York, with all the singles action once again taking place on the famous Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The tournament is still reeling from the loss of Roger Federer on Tuesday night but with Rafael Nadal and the new woman on the scene Bianca Andreescu lighting up the Wednesday card, his absence won’t be felt for long.
Day 9 Recap
It was a dramatic day of tennis in the Big Apple on Tuesday where the men kept the excitement to themselves. Daniil Medvedev overcame Stan Wawrinka and then the Swiss misery was compounded later in the evening when Roger Federer surrendered a 2-1 lead to go down in five to Grigor Dimitrov. In the women’s draw there were comfortable wins for Elina Svitolina and Serena Williams who set up a juicy semi-final against each other.
It was a terrible day for us betting wise. Stan Wawrinka failed to get going against Daniil Medvedev until it was all too late while Qiang Wang was a bag of nerves and was reduced to a club novice by Serena and then after dominating the early stages Roger Federer couldn’t go on and win so all in all it was very much a day to forget for us.

Day Session
Belinda Bencic vs Donna Vekic
Two women looking to make it into a first Grand Slam semi-final open up the action on Arthur Ashe on Wednesday afternoon when the Swiss star Belinda Bencic takes on the gutsy Croatian player Donna Vekic for a spot in the last four.
Bencic overcame the sizeable challenge of Naomi Osaka in the previous round and she won that fair and square and on merit which makes her a worthy favourite for this contest. Vekic came past Julia Goerges in a marathon last round but she got very lucky when the German served for the contest only to chuck in three double faults in that game. Credit goes to the Croatian for coming through but she should need more than that here. Vekic is a fighter though and I like that about her so that puts me off backing Bencic on a handicap or something so I’m not going to get involved in this one.
Matteo Berrettini vs Gael Monfils
The second match of the day session sees two men looking to make it into the last four of the final Grand Slam of the year and continue their impressive campaigns when the Italian ace Matteo Berrettini takes on the French star Gael Monfils in what you would think would be a power packed contest.
Monfils has looked a million dollars in this tournament but to be fair to Berrettini he played one of the best matches of his career in seeing off Andrey Rublev in the previous round. Prior to that though he had gone four sets in his other three matches. It could be that he is getting better as the tournament goes on but he’ll certainly need to back up his effort against Rublev. That is because Monfils seems to have all the tools to cope with him. He has the better groundstrokes and his lightning movement can get more shots of the Italian back than the other way round. I like Berrettini but he’s still a little one-dimensional at this stage so I fancy Monfils, who has been here before, can win through a relatively lengthy clash.

Night Session
Bianca Andreescu vs Elise Mertens
The night session clash in the women’s draw sees Bianca Andreescu looking to continue her wonderful 2019 when she goes up against the Belgian star Elise Mertens who is looking for a spot in a second Grand Slam semi-final in as many seasons having made the last four of the Australian Open last year.
Andreescu is the new big star of the women’s game but even then I wonder if this will all come too soon for her. Much of her good form on the WTA tour this year has been as an underdog and a relative unknown. She’s now the favourite to make the final and playing on the biggest stage in the sport. She’s still good enough to win but faith should be placed in Mertens pushing her all the way. Mertens is very solid, the occasion shouldn’t get to her like it did with say Qiang Wang the other day and she should put up a very strong challenge. Over 20.5 games looks the way to play this one.
Diego Schwartzman vs Rafael Nadal
With Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both out of the tournament, Rafael Nadal looks to have a golden chance to win another Grand Slam, but before he can think about doing that, he has to take care of the diminutive Argentine player Diego Schwartzman in the final match of the day.
Nadal will like this quarter final match up having beaten his friend and foe on all seven occasions they have met but Schwartzman has shown he can take it to Nadal and one wonders whether Nadal’s body will continue to hold up although he hasn’t really been truly tested yet. He might be here though because Schwartzman has taken him to four sets in the Australian Open and French Open last year and seems to come alive in New York. His movement is incredible and he’s hitting the ball well. I don’t think anyone can make a genuine case for Schwartzman winning this match but he can be awkward enough to stay within 8.5 games.
