2019 US Open Tennis – Day 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of the US Open gets underway in New York and after one of the best days of tennis in recent times on Tuesday, there is a real buzz at Flushing Meadows as the final Grand Slam of the year continues at a pace.

We are back to the halves of the draw which took place on Monday on the third day of competition which means the likes of Serena Williams, Ash Barty, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer headline another good looking card.

Day 2 Recap

It was deciding sets and tight matches almost everywhere we looked across New York on Tuesday with Alexander Zverev coming through a decider while Stefanos Tsitsipas and Dominic Thiem were among the big names to perish in four sets. The only truly easy win for a seeded player was for Rafael Nadal. In the women’s draw Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep both had to come through deciding sets while Sloane Stephens bit the dust in a disappointing performance in the evening.

It was a near perfect day for us betting wise. We took five bets as singles and four of them came in very easily. The game line in the match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev was never in question while Alison Riske came from a set down to outlast Garbine Muguruza. Gael Monfils covered his handicap while Yafan Wang stayed within the required games of Caroline Wozniacki. The only loss came in the Steve Johnson and Nick Kyrgios match where the over in games didn’t land. If that wasn’t enough our daily accumulator added to the profits!

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The women’s match in the day session on the main court sees the former finalist Karolina Pliskova in action. She goes up against the unheralded and lowly ranked Georgian player Mariam Bolkvadze in a slightly strange game to be scheduled so prominently. Roger Federer is then up second when he goes up against a man who was seeded here in the past in Damir Dzumhur who will be looking to exploit any weaknesses in the Swiss star.

The night session begins with the men too when the defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic takes on the talented and powerful Argentine player Juan Ignacio Londero before Serena Williams is back on centre stage again. In a match which represents the present and the future of American tennis, the multi-time Grand Slam winner takes on Caty McNally for a place in the third round.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

The action on Louis Armstrong Stadium has been of a much more competitive element so far this week and that could well continue on Wednesday. Beaten finalist in 2014, Kei Nishikori will look to get into the third round again when he meets Bradley Klahn before Elina Svitolina takes on Venus Williams in a match which deserved a much bigger billing than it has got. The day session rounds off with Cincinnati champion Madison Keys taking on Lin Zhu of China.

The night session on this court certainly looks more competitive than on Ashe. French Open champion Ash Barty opens it up when she takes on the American star Lauren Davis before a very good looking men’s match rounds off the action on this second court. That sees the talented pair of Borna Coric and Grigor Dimitrov locking horns in a match which could have plenty of mileage in it.

Grandstand

If you have had a ticket on Grandstand so far this week or kept your live stream on there you won’t have been disappointed so far and another decent schedule takes place on there on Wednesday. It begins with the British number one Jo Konta looking to see off the challenge of Margarita Gasparyan before the Cincinnati champion Daniil Medvedev is back on court. He meets the Bolivian player Hugo Dellien before a couple of veterans collide in the men’s draw as Stan Wawrinka faces Jeremy Chardy. The final match of the day on this court sees our outright bet Sofia Kenin going up against Laura Siegemund.

Court 17

It is the women that get the action underway on Wednesday when Qiang Wang gets some show court action. She plays Alison Van Uytvanck before Petra Martic goes up against Ana Bogdan in what should be a decent enough match. It is the men who round off the play out on Court 17 as Denis Kudla meets Dusan Lajovic before the powerful hitting of Reilly Opelka will look to come past the German test that is Dominik Koepfer for a place in the last 32 of the draw.

Best of the Rest

The doubles tournaments begin on the outside courts across the play on Wednesday but mixed in around them is some decent singles action with a few big names dotted about the Flushing Meadows complex. Court 5 will play host to Cristian Garin and Maria Sakkari while Feliciano Lopez and Dayana Yastremska make up part of the action on Court 10. British eyes will be on Court 13 where Dan Evans takes on the seeded Lucas Pouille while Anastasija Sevastova is also on that court as is David Goffin.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets in the men’s draw on Wednesday with the first one being on Dusan Lajovic who I think can see off the challenge of Denis Kudla without needing a deciding set. Lajovic is one of the more improved players over the last year, so much so that he thrashed Kudla in a Challenger event as recently as last year and is now ranked 29 in the world. He won 64 60 on that occasion which shows how he can outclass his opponent and these slower conditions will only suit the Serbian even more. Kudla did well to see off Janko Tipsarevic in the first round but there’s a few levels between the two Serbs. I expect Lajovic to deal with Kudla pretty comfortably.

The other bet that I like is more than 40.5 games in the match between Reilly Opelka and Dominik Koepfer. This will be their first meeting at main tour level but they’ve played seven sets at Challenger and below that and four of them went to a tiebreak. You’ve got to think tiebreaks will be a keen feature in this match too with service breaks likely to be on the short side of things. With that in mind, with four sets which include a tiebreak or two we should have no trouble in getting this particular line covered.

Women’s Betting

There are two for me in the women’s draw as well. The first of those is on Venus Williams to see off Elina Svitolina in what should be a great match. Svitolina has won their last two meetings and done so relatively comfortably but we saw on Monday that Venus goes up a few notches in New York and still has the quality to deliver a stunning match. Svitolina took advantage of early nerves of her opponent in the first round but laboured to a win. She won’t be getting no nerves from Venus and if the American cracks it as cleanly as she did on Monday she’s a massive threat here.

Rebecca Peterson has wins over Jo Konta and Sloane Stephens on a hard court this summer and I expect her to lay down a decent challenge to one of my dark horses in Dayana Yastremska. The Ukrainian was rubbish in the first round, making 39 unforced errors against a woman who couldn’t get the ball past her, but if there is one thing I like about her it is that when she is in a juicy battle she enjoys the combat and goes toe-to-toe with her opponent. I reckon this is an outside pick as the match of the day and as such I fancy it will have more than 20.5 games.

Daily Accumulator

We hit the jackpot with Tuesday’s accumulator with it never in any doubt until the last couple of legs but both Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka came from a set down to win to leave us £45.22 in profit for them for the week. Here is today’s offering.

De Minaur win

Carreno Busta win

Wawrinka win

Wang win

Sevastova win
