In terms of depth in the tournament rather than actual days of it, the US Open enters its second week on Sunday when the last 16 of both singles draws gets underway out in New York while the doubles continues around it.
We’ve seen a few big names bite the dust over the course of the first week of the tournament but three of the biggest and best are on show on Sunday, with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic all in action.
Day 6 Recap
We had comfortable wins for Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka on Saturday in the headline matches on the main courts while Bianca Andreescu continued her rise to prominence when she took care of Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets. Alexander Zverev, Marin Cilic and Gael Monfils all came through but had lengthy affairs in doing so while elsewhere in the women’s draw the likes of Julia Goerges, Taylor Townsend and Elise Mertens were all convincing winners.
It was a profitable day for us on Saturday despite the defeat for John Isner. He dominated the first three sets against Marin Cilic but managed to lose two of them and went down in four sets. Goerges produced the upset we expected her to though and Monfils came past Denis Shapovalov in a five set epic out on Armstrong.

Arthur Ashe Stadium
It is the men who begin things on the first Sunday of the tournament. Roger Federer will be hoping to play on both Sunday’s of the event and if that is to happen then he is going to need to see off a David Goffin who has beaten him on a big stage before at the o2 Arena. Serena Williams then follows those two when she takes on the competitive Croatian player Petra Martic, who is slowly becoming a force in the Grand Slams.
The night session on Ashe looks very tasty indeed. It will begin with possibly the tie of the round in the women’s draw as Elina Svitolina puts her defensive skills up against the insane power and clean hitting aggression of Cincinnati champion Madison Keys. Once they are done two of the last three winners of this tournament will collide when Novak Djokovic faces up against Stan Wawrinka.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
The French Open champion is the first to grace the second court on Sunday when Ash Barty bids for a place in another Grand Slam quarter final. She faces the much improved Qiang Wang in a match that could easily be tougher than it might look. British eyes will then be on this court when two wonderful servers collide as Jo Konta faces Karolina Pliskova for a spot in the quarter finals of the competition. It is a doubles match which rounds off the early session before Daniil Medvedev will take on an opponent and the crowd once again. He faces up to Dominik Koepfer with Novak Djokovic potentially awaiting the winner.
Grandstand
It is mostly doubles matches on the third of the stadium courts on Sunday but the organisers of the tournament have saved one singles match for this part of Flushing Meadows. It sees two unseeded men looking to set up a possible clash with Roger Federer in the quarter final when Grigor Dimitrov takes on Alex de Minaur in a match which given what is on the line will surely be extremely competitive and potentially quite tense.

Men’s Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets for the men’s draw on Sunday. The first of them comes away from the main two stages where I expect Alex de Minaur to have a fair bit too much for Grigor Dimitrov. It is good to see the Bulgarian back at this stage of the tournament but let’s not kid ourselves into his fortune. In the last two rounds he’s enjoyed a walkover and played a lucky loser. Lucky losers in the third round of Slams is a miracle from heaven so he’s enjoyed a bit of luck so far, not that I hold that against him. There’s been nothing lucky about de Minaur’s path here though. He has seen off the seeded challenges of Cristian Garin and Kei Nishikori on successive days which shows his fitness and resilience and I expect him to come through here without needing a deciding set.
Later in the day, or night as it will be, I think Stan Wawrinka to stay within 6.5 games of Novak Djokovic is another good bet. I don’t think this is Wawrinka who beat Djokovic in the final here in 2016 but he’s getting better as the year goes on and the big stage and occasion may well inspire him once again. Djokovic didn’t make much of a fuss of his shoulder issue in the previous round against Denis Kudla but it is clearly still around just based on his delayed practice ahead of that match. I don’t know how much of an impact that injury will have here but I do know that even if Djokovic is fit I’d fancy the Stanimal to win a set and that can be enough to cover the handicap.
Women’s Betting
I like two in the women’s draw on Sunday as well where the first one is on a close match between Jo Konta and Karolina Pliskova. These are two women who can live behind their wonderful serves and both are playing pretty well at the minute so I really don’t see there being a whole lot between them. Pliskova actually leads the head-to-head between these two 6-1 and she may well prevail here too but every match they’ve completed away from the clay has gone to a deciding third set and that is the sort of thing I’m expecting here. The game line for this one is 21.5 and all five of those hard court and grass matches have covered. This one can too.
The other bet I like is for Madison Keys to beat Elina Svitolina. Keys has been the one woman who has really impressed me so far in the tournament. She is serving bombs and backing them up with some huge groundstrokes and while Svitolina is an insanely good defensive player I fancy there is only so much she’ll be able to get back without looking to go on the aggressive herself. That would take her out of her comfort zone a little which is not ideal so in front of a big crowd behind the home girl I’m going to take the American ace to continue to follow up her Cincinnati success with a win here.
