2019 US Open Tennis – Day 9 Tips and Betting Preview

The quarter finals get underway in the US Open on Tuesday as the first half of matches in the round take place on the Arthur Ashe Stadium at Flushing Meadows, as we head towards the business end of the final Grand Slam of the year.

The big names are slowly dropping away in the tournament but in Roger Federer and Serena Williams, we have two of the biggest there have ever been on show on Tuesday, even though we only have four matches.

Day 8 Recap

We lost the defending champion Naomi Osaka on Monday afternoon. She was beaten by Belinda Bencic in a clean performance from the Swiss ace before Alexander Zverev was then upset by Diego Schwartzman. Rafael Nadal was troubled in the night session but came through while over on Armstrong there were wins of different kinds for Donna Vekic, Matteo Berrettini, Elise Mertens and Gael Monfils.

To say it was a frustrating betting day for us on Monday wouldn’t really be doing it justice. It looked like it was going to get off to a fine start as Julia Goerges served for her match with Donna Vekic at 76 54 but three double faults in that game followed and she was done. Alexander Zverev won the first set and was a break up in the third too before fading away tamely while Andrey Rublev was blown away. It was a day to forget for sure.

Day Session

Jo Konta vs Elina Svitolina

The women’s match in the day session is the one which gets us underway on Tuesday afternoon when the British number one Jo Konta takes on the Ukrainian fifth seed Elina Svitolina, who will be looking for a spot in a second successive Grand Slam having reached the last four at Wimbledon.

These two women have met four times in the past and Svitolina has won the lot. Worryingly for Konta, they were all on a hard court so the head-to-head record is particularly telling here. Both ladies have played well in this tournament. Svitolina has been very impressive indeed but Konta has shown a lot of good signs as well. We’re getting to the stage now where the nerves truly creep on at this level for these two which makes me think better betting opportunities lie elsewhere on the day.

Stan Wawrinka vs Daniil Medvedev

The first men’s match on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court on Tuesday sees the top quarter final in the draw being played out when the 2016 champion here Stan Wawrinka takes on the Cincinnati champion and form horse in Daniil Medvedev.

I keep thinking the time has come for the amount of tennis that Medvedev has played recently to catch up with him but I’m certain it will here. He looked laboured for a couple of sets in the previous round but Dominik Koepfer wasn’t good enough to capitalise on that. Wawrinka will be. He loves this stage and was hitting the ball so cleanly against Novak Djokovic and the longer this one goes the more dominant I think he will come. Medvedev made plenty of talk of how tired his muscles were in the previous round and that is understandable given the amount of tennis he’s played. I’m on the Swiss ace for this one.

Night Session

Serena Williams vs Qiang Wang

The night session opens up with the former champion and beaten finalist last year in Serena Williams taking on a woman at this stage of a Grand Slam for the first time in Qiang Wang in what is the first meeting between the two.

Wang had some good wins on a hard court at the beginning of the year which backed up her excellent Asian swing towards the end of last year and she has shown she can meet fire with fire but also that she can find the angles to get her opponent moving. She’ll need to do that here obviously because if she just lets Serena tee off she’s in trouble. I would expect Serena to come through this one but it might take her a while to get the feel for her opponent. Even when she does Wang should remain competitive so I think the Chinese player can be backed with the 5.5 game start.

Roger Federer vs Grigor Dimitrov

When Serena has settled her business it is the turn of another player who is no stranger to winning the title here to take centre stage when Roger Federer meets the man who was once dubbed the ‘mini Federer’ in Grigor Dimitrov.

We have seen and heard about the struggles the Bulgarian has had in recent times so it is to his credit that he has continued to battle hard and has made it through to this quarter final stage. Whether he goes any further however is open to debate. Roger Federer began this tournament quite slowly but he has been immaculate in his previous two rounds, albeit against fatigued opponents who offered nothing like their best game against him.

I don’t see anything but a Federer win here and I would be surprised if it isn’t in straight sets. I would imagine he will win at least one set comfortably so there is probably some good mileage in this one having less than 33.5 games especially when you consider Federer leads their H2H 7-0 and Dimitrov has only won two of 18 sets. Furthermore, of the 16 sets Federer has won, seven of them have been by 62 or 61. I’ll play the under.
