2019 Vitality Blast – Sussex vs Glamorgan Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match in the Vitality Blast on Tuesday evening and it comes from the South Group where Sussex can hit top spot in the table when they play host to a Glamorgan side who are still looking for their first win of the competition.

Sussex will replace Kent at the summit of the South Group table should they come out on top in this contest, but a win will keep Glamorgan in the hunt for a quarter final spot. Anything else from this non-televised clash and they could be left needing snookers.

Sussex

The beaten finalists of last season are still undefeated in this tournament this year, and are heavy favourites for that to remain the case. That probably isn’t a surprise because there is no doubt they have improved with the bat, and even though they’ve not seen too much of Jofra Archer they are no weaker with the ball either. This tournament is all about peaking on the big day but from what we’ve seen so far Sussex look like a side who are going to be tough to stop.

They have a top six that matches anything in the competition for brute power, class and clean hitting. If there is a weakness it is that they lack someone to bat around but there is a lot of experience in their ranks and those players know when to rein it in and when the time is for them to express themselves. It makes facing them a very daunting experience as you know you won’t get any change from their bowlers.

Glamorgan

It has been a wretched campaign of inconsistency for Glamorgan. They have either been very good or completely useless, without a great deal in between. Twice they have been shot out for less than 100 and they were well on the way to another low score in Bristol before the rain appeared to save them that day. It is clear for all to see that they need to find a way to stem the carnage when a clatter of wickets does fall.

If they can do that there could yet be a way back into this tournament for the Welsh outfit. I say that because they’ve only conceded more than 150 in one of their last four matches so they are bowling pretty well, they just need some support from their batsmen. In order to get that they will need their top players to stand up and find some form.

Team News

As has been well-documented, Jofra Archer is playing for the seconds this week so he isn’t going to be around for this match but Chris Jordan has returned since the last time we saw Sussex on our screens.

Glamorgan have Michael Hogan and Kiran Carlson back in their ranks for this match to bolster their batting and bowling accordingly. Carlson could slot in and open the batting while Lukas Carey could be vulnerable if Hogan is picked.

Betting

Sussex are massive favourites for this match and I expect them to win given how poorly Glamorgan are batting at the minute but they are plenty short enough and I’m in no rush to take a handicap at a short price either. That leads me to the side markets for a punt and I like the idea of David Wiese making more than 14.5 runs in this match. He has already clobbered 57 against this opposition in the 50 over competition this season and has been in good form with the bat in this tournament too. His four innings to date have been 44*, 3, 26 and 37 and he’s in a good position at five where he can play himself in before having to go bonkers. Glamorgan have an attack that should get him in but if he doesn’t bat we’re voided anyway. This line looks too low to me.

I’m also going to play Chris Cooke for the top Glamorgan batsman again. I took this bet when Glamorgan played Gloucestershire last week and he pumped 42 not out in just 21 balls but he couldn’t quite get up to Fakhar Zaman who made 50 in the match. Glamorgan got away from Gloucestershire early in that match but they’ll do well to repeat that feat against this Sussex new ball attack. I think this will be set up for someone to top score in the middle order and that man can be Cooke.
