Friday Recap

John Higgins took the last two frames to keep on the coattails of Dave Gilbert in the first semi-final. The Scot, beaten in the final for the past two years, will go into the final session of the match just 13-11 behind, which when he fell 11-6 down would probably have been a position he would have taken. Judd Trump seized a narrow advantage over Gary Wilson in the other semi-final. He leads 9-7 heading into the third session of the four on Saturday morning, with the match concluding on Saturday evening.

In Play Betting

I’ve got more than enough of a betting interest in the semi-final that is at the halfway stage between Judd Trump and Gary Wilson so my attention on Saturday comes in the match which is three quarters of the way through, as John Higgins looks to overturn his 13-11 deficit against Dave Gilbert in what is set up for a brilliant final session.

Towards the end of the third session, Gilbert looked to be seeing the finishing line and cued nastily across a couple of balls and at 13-9 up he might have let the Scot off the hook. Sleeping on any lead with his history of blowing them wasn’t going to be easy for Gilbert but knowing he should be winning by more would eat away at stronger men than him experience wise. The real issue that Gilbert has here for me is Higgins has barely shown up for three sessions and he’s two behind. You can be sure as night follows day that he’ll bring his best to the party here and I don’t see how Gilbert repels that now. Take his amazing 143 out and Higgins has offered just five 50 breaks in 23 frames which is awful but he’s well within reach. If he’s even 80% of his ability you’ve got to think he’ll have the inner strength to get this one done.
