2019 World Series of Darts Finals – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening night of the World Series of Darts Finals sees the 16 men who qualified for the tournament without a seeding take to the stage out in Amsterdam, with a place in the second round against a seeded player the reward for winning.

We have to wait until later in the weekend to see the likes of Michael van Gerwen and Raymond Barneveld, but Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith, Mensur Suljovic and Nathan Aspinall all ensure the opening night should be high quality.

First Four Matches

The opening match of the tournament feels like a low key one as the veteran Wayne Jones goes up against a Jonny Clayton who was in fine form last week. Ian White had a tough first round draw in the European Championship last week and he’ll face the quarter finalist from that event Ricky Evans. The two matches to follow that should be extremely entertaining as Kyle Anderson meets Mensur Suljovic before we go into the break with Krzysztof Ratajski facing the UK Open winner Nathan Aspinall.

Later Four Matches

The second half of the night sees a repeat of the semi-final from last weekend when Michael Smith takes on Gerwyn Price for the right to take on Michael van Gerwen in the next round. Dave Chisnall then goes up against Simon Whitlock before the Dutchmen take to the stage in front of their own fans. Danny Noppert meets Jeffrey de Zwaan in the penultimate match of the night before Jermaine Wattimena goes up against Gabriel Clemens.

Betting

I’ll go with just the one bet on Friday night as I’m not a massive fan of betting in best of 11 matches on the bigger stages. We have to wait until the final match of the night for it to come around and I’m with the home player Jermaine Wattimena to beat the man who is here courtesy of making the German World Series event final Gabriel Clemens.

I’m a big fan of Clemens and I see myself backing him a lot next year as he builds up his big match experience but he is largely here through rising a home crowd in that German event and the tables are turned here as it is Wattimena who will have the crowd behind him. The Dutchman has been in decent nick on the big stage recently. He made the quarters at the World Grand Prix and the last 16 in the European Championship with Adrian Lewis and Peter Wright among his victims in those events. He can be erratic but that has been the case less so this year and so with familiarity on the big stage and the crowd support I think the Dutchman can showcase the 30 place difference between the two in the world rankings with a win here.
