2020-21 Premier League – Everton vs Southampton Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Premier League weekend once again concludes with the Monday Night Football, which this week comes from Goodison Park where Everton will continue their push for European football when they host a Southampton side who are desperate for a result.

The Toffees have had a much better season than recent times and will be buoyed by winning the Merseyside Derby last weekend whereas things have been a lot harder for Southampton recently and they need something from this one for their confidence as much as anything else.

Where to watch

The match will once again be shown live on the Monday Night Football programme which is on Sky Sports Main Event and the Sky Sports Premier League channels. The show begins at 7pm with the match kicking off at 8pm.

Everton

This feels like a big match for Everton. When the season started they were dark horses for a European spot but should they win this match they will move level on points with their Merseyside rivals Liverpool in sixth place and would be just two points off a Champions League spot with a game in hand. The obvious issue with that is that they are without a win in their last five on their home patch, which includes losses to Fulham and Newcastle United.

Everton have produced their better work on the road this term and if they are going to go on and secure European football without the need of winning the FA Cup they are going to have to sort out their home form. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s absence hasn’t helped them in recent times so they will be buoyed by his return here but they still need to convince a lot more on their own patch. Until they do it is hard to trust them.

Southampton

One of the most disappointing factors of this current season has been the way the campaign has completely unravelled for Southampton. This has all the makings of being a fine season for the Hampshire outfit and at one stage they even sat on top of the table, but injuries started to come along and have never really relented at any stage and they have paid the price for that. They are continuing to pay the price for that.

Ralph Hasenhuttl and his charges go into this match having lost seven of their last eight matches with a solitary draw against Chelsea the only crumb of comfort in between. There is the damning statistic doing the rounds that Southampton have shipped 17 goals in their last four away games, and even if you take the nine that Man Utd scored out of the mix, that is still eight in three which isn’t good enough. While injuries are not helping, they need to find a way to be harder to beat.

Team News

Everton are expected to name Dominic Calvert-Lewin in their starting XI for this match. There is also a good chance that Allan returns to the ranks for this one as well. Yerry Mina remains out though so Mason Holgate is likely to continue to fill in.

Oriol Romeu has been added to the Suothampton injury list which previously included the likes of Theo Walcott, Kyle Walker-Peters and Ibrahima Diallo. Takumi Minamino is also going to be out with injury but Danny Ings is expected to start.

Betting

This is not an easy match to bet on as we have a side who have forgotten how to win at home taking on a team who have lost the knowhow of how to win anywhere. You would probably make Everton the favourites based on the shocking form and injury list that Southampton are dealing with at present. The question then comes down to whether you trust the Toffees to get the job one on their home patch at a relatively skinny price. I’d expect them to win but I don’t trust them to do it.

I certainly don’t trust Southampton to win the game in their present state so I need to look elsewhere for a punt on the match and at 3/4 I think both teams to score is the way to go here. Admittedly Everton have only scored two goals in their last five here but they did score against Manchester City last time out and have Calvert-Lewin back for this one. Everton haven’t kept a clean sheet in six at home and while Southampton are struggling for form they do generally score goals and have players who can hurt Everton here. I like both teams to score.
