2020-21 Premier League – Leeds vs Liverpool Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Premier League action keeps on coming and this week we have a tantalising Monday Night Football between the entertaining Leeds side and a Liverpool team who look like they sold their soul on the eve of the match.

Leeds sit in the top half of the table and a win will take them to within a couple of points of the European places which will be a huge incentive for them. Liverpool sit sixth but it doesn’t seem to matter where they finish now if the shameful European Super League gets approved.

Where to watch

The match will be shown on what is sure to be a fiery Monday Night Football programme on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. The programme begins at 7pm and the match kicks off at 8pm.

Leeds United

This has been one of the better first seasons back in the Premier League that we have seen in a while from Leeds United. They have gone up a level but have not amended their style to battle for points and scrape their way to survival like so many do. Instead they have taken it to the competition and imposed themselves on the league and their reward for that is a very acceptable finish, one which could get even better should they finish the campaign strongly.

That is a brave way to do things. It leaves them vulnerable at times but they accept that risk because they know they are going to create chances at the other end, leaving the outcome of the match in the hands of their attacking players, widely regarded as the better players in the league. Leeds have won their last three matches so they are in great form, as highlighted in their latest victory against Manchester City last weekend.

Liverpool

The champions of last season have not put up a great title defence. When the season began them retaining the title was not guaranteed but I doubt there would have been many out there who would have thought that Liverpool would have been fighting hard with the likes of West Ham United to cling on to fourth spot in the table after 32 matches. Some very indifferent form, whether purely due to injuries or something else, has led to that situation.

The good things for Liverpool going into this match is they have already seen West Ham United lose this weekend so a win here will send the Reds up to fourth in the table. The other advantage they have is that their form on the road has been a good deal better than their home form so far in 2021 which should give them some confidence here. Liverpool have also won their last three matches coming in here, although just what they’ve beaten in that time is open to debate.

Team News

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa will be forced into one change with captain Liam Cooper suspended after his red card at the Etihad Stadium. Pascal Struijk or Robin Koch would be likely to come in. Raphinha and Rodrigo will undergo fitness tests ahead of the game.

Liverpool have declared no new injury concerns so with the exception of the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson still on the treatment table. Diogo Jota will be hoping to start the match.

Betting

The reverse meeting between these two sides was an absolute cracker and while we may not get the seven goals we got in that one this late in the season, I find it hard to believe that we won’t see another game with a barrel load of chances and plenty of goal action. The under or over in this match can only be about how clinical the attacking players are with the chances that come their way. Both these teams are a great deal more proficient when attacking rather than defending.

Liverpool are likely to play into Leeds’ hands with their high line allowing the likes of Harrison, Raphinha and Bamford the space in behind to do their thing but the Liverpool press is sure to have the less technical ball players from the Leeds defence under pressure. This should be a cracking watch and I’m surprised the goal line is as low as three here when you consider how Leeds matches against the big teams tend to go. There should be more than enough chances for this to be covered so it is the over for me.
