2020-21 Sky Bet Championship – Coventry City vs QPR Tips and Betting Preview

The second Championship weekend of the season begins on Friday night when one of the new teams in the division, Coventry City, host one of the more established sides in the form of QPR in their first home game back in the second tier.

These two teams had very different starts to their campaign last week with QPR picking up a fine home win against Nottingham Forest while Coventry City were edged out by Bristol City at Ashton Gate so it will be interesting if those patterns continue here.

Where to watch

The match will be shown in full on the Sky Main Event and the Sky Football channels. The broadcast begins at 7pm and the match itself kicks off at 7.45pm.

Coventry City

The Sky Blues have come a long way over the last few seasons. It is only three seasons ago that they were plying their trade in League 2 but they have made their way through League 1 and now into the Championship, for which Mark Robins deserves an awful lot of credit, not just for the job that he has done but also the pleasing style in which he has adopted with his Coventry outfit. Time will tell if they are tough enough for the Championship but they’ve earned the right to find out.

If they are going to survive this season they are going to need to make sure they keep a goal threat but as well as that they will need to defend well. The one thing the sides that come into this division tend to struggle with is keeping clean sheets and that was clearly the case for them last week. If you start leaking goals at this level it can be hard to plug the gap so that might be a point of attention for them at the minute.

QPR

There are always teams that going into the second week of the season you have to look at and be strong with your initial assessment of them even though they got off to a decent start last week. Their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest had much to like about it, not least their new signing up front getting off the mark. The big question is just what they beat in Nottingham Forest and it might be that they came up against a team nursing a hangover from last season.

QPR were not the greatest on their travels last season and that was when they had the likes of Ebere Eze in their ranks so it will be interesting to see how they go about their first away game this term. They have already lost on their travels in the Carabao Cup which might be a guide that they are going to struggle again here. Clearly they will be out to avoid that and stop that rot from hampering them again this term.

Team News

Coventry City boss Mark Robins will be without Liam Kelly and Jodi Jones who are both out of this match with injury but he does have Michael Rose and Fankaty Dabo back after they returned in the cup in midweek.

QPR were boosted by the return to action of Geoff Cameron, George Thomas and Yoann Barbet last week and with another week behind them they should be stronger here. Mark Warburton has recorded no new injuries.

Betting

I wasn’t overly keen about the chance of QPR before the season started a win over a Nottingham Forest team for whom the jury is out has done nothing to change my mind so I’m going to take Rangers on here. I especially have no love for them away from home and although Coventry City aren’t a team who enjoy much home advantage at the best of times, least of all at present when there are no fans in that stadium, I still like the Sky Blues here.

Coventry play in a pleasing way but the one thing that having no fans in can allow them to do is soak up pressure and utilise the counterattack without criticism or anxiety coming from the terraces and that is a tactic they could very well employ here. Coventry certainly have goals in them and if they can keep things tight at the back, which might not be all that difficult given the troubles of QPR on the road, then if there is a winner it could well be them.
