2020-21 UEFA Nations League – Saturday 5th September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The first round of matches in the new UEFA Nations League season concludes on Saturday when the teams yet to get their competition underway get the chance to do so on a day where there is a lot of intrigue in many of the fixtures.

Saturday is the day where England will get to attempt to lay an old wound to rest while there are a number of decent nations on show, not least the defending champions Portugal who add further star quality to proceedings.

League A

There are four matches in the top league on Saturday as many of Europe’s elite come out to play including the current European and world champions. The first match to get underway comes in Group 2 which is the one England are in. They make the trip to Reykjavik to take on Iceland for the first time since their embarrassing Euro 2016 exit to the Scandinavians. The other match in Group 2 sees Belgium begin their campaign when they take on the challenge of the promoted Denmark. In the other group, Group 3, world champions France make the trip to Solna to face a Sweden side they will know all about from Euro 2020 qualifying. The other match is the pick of the games as defending champions Portugal welcome Croatia to Porto.

League C

There are four matches in League C on Saturday as well including an early afternoon kick off in Group 2 where North Macedonia entertain Armenia in Skopje. The other match in that group comes slightly later when Estonia go up against Georgia. The other group in action on Saturday is Group 1 and it gets underway with the two weaker sides in it meeting when Azerbaijan go up against Luxembourg while Cyprus take on Montenegro in the other fixture.

League D

The other match comes from Group 2 in League D and it sees two of the lesser lights of Europe having the chance for a rare win at this level when Gibraltar host a San Marino side that will be delighted to be involved in an almost competitive fixture having been taken to the cleaners in nearly all of their Euro 2020 qualifiers. That said, the home side are still a pretty warm order to come out on top in that one.

Betting

I’ll go with two on Saturday. The first of those is on a much better England side than the one Iceland played in 2016 to gain revenge for that defeat. I would expect England to win this match were Iceland at full strength let alone the one missing the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Aron Gunnarsson and Alfred Finnbogason among others. England are without Harry Maguire which isn’t ideal but that is a lot of creativity that Iceland are having to do without and even without Maguire it isn’t like England don’t have enough solid defenders. This is a very exciting England team going forward though and even if they do concede a goal I still think they can cover a 1.5 goal handicap.

The other bet I like is for Georgia to beat an Estonia side who are in a terrible trot of late. Estonia are winless in their last eight matches and have only one win in 11 which was against Gibraltar which barely counts on the win scale. Estonia have only scored one goal in their last seven outings so their struggles are clear for all to see. Georgia aren’t the world’s best team but they are far from the worst either. They won five of their six matches in the first Nations League and seemingly gained a lot of confidence from that. Georgia go into this match off the back of successive defeats but they were against Croatia and Switzerland and both are in a different league to Estonia. Prior to that Georgia were unbeaten in four which included draws with Denmark, Ireland and South Korea, all of whom would be huge favourites against Estonia. It is the visitors for me here.
