2020 Abu Dhabi Championship Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The first Rolex Series event winner of the season will be crowned on Sunday when the final round of the Abu Dhabi Championship is played out on what promises to be a wonderful day of golf to get a big year kicked into life.

There is a lot of money and Race to Dubai points on the line on Sunday regardless of finishing position so even those who aren’t in contention to win the tournament have a fair bit to play for over the final 8 holes.

Round 3 Recap

It was another low scoring day in the tournament on Saturday and at the end of it the veteran Lee Westwood is the man who takes the lead into the final round on 14 under par. He leads by one from the overnight leader Francesco Laporta and regular tournament winner in recent times Bernd Wiesberger. They are another shot ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick on 12 under while the likes of Kurt Kitayama and Sergio Garcia are on 11 under. Louis Oosthuizen and Ross Fisher are stalking the lead on nine under.

The less said about our Saturday bet the better as a truly terrible start from Renato Paratore meant that our dough was done within the first hour of the day which was annoying. Hopefully we can find something to salvage the week with in the match betting front on Sunday to take with us from the tournament.

Sunday Betting

We only really have the outright market to go at on Sunday and while it is a wide open one I’m not sure I want to be getting too involved in it. I fancy Bernd Wiesberger to get the job done from here as he so often does in these big events. The trouble is there are some class acts close enough to be playing free who could easily go after a load of pins carefree and put up a decent score.

I’m hoping that can be the case for Victor Perez or Thomas Pieters, our two pre-tournament picks who are both on eight under and in touching distance of a place at least if they can get off to a fast start. The prices for the main protagonists are about right though so when it comes to a bet for Sunday my interest will be in the three balls.

Sunday 3 Balls

The final round of the tournament sees the remainder of the field going out in three balls with the last group of Bernd Wiesberger, Lee Westwood and Francesco Laporta off out at 08.05 GMT with Matt Fitzpatrick,  Sergio Garcia and Kurt Kitayama out at 07.54. It is the group that is out before them which catches my eye though and that is where my bet comes from.

Sebastian Heisele/Rafa Cabrera Bello/Thomas Detry

Match tees off at 07.43 GMT

The continental European trio of German ace Sebastian Heisele, Spanish star Rafa Cabrera Bello and the brilliant Belgian player Thomas Detry form the third to last group out onto the golf course with all three men eyeing up a low score to push for the title.

I have to say it is unlikely any of these three will come through and win the crown from the positions they start in. Cabrera Bello never truly convinces me when it comes to a Sunday round while Heisele might be in illustrious company that he possibly shouldn’t be keeping here. Detry leads the field on strokes gained on approach through three rounds and I fancy that could be significant here. He isn’t putting that badly that he’s giving back those shots to his two playing partners. I’m not always one for backing favourites in three balls but I do think Detry is worthy of that status here.
