2020 BDO World Championship Darts – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second day of the BDO World Darts Championship sees the preliminary round and the first round of the men’s competition continuing as well as a couple of matches from the women’s draw on another busy day inside the Indigo at the o2 in London on Sunday.

We saw a good quality opening day of the tournament on Saturday with a lot of close matches and some big names under extreme pressure and that pattern could well continue over the course of the two sessions on Sunday.

Afternoon Session

The action gets underway with one of our two outright bets taking to the stage when Wayne Warren begins his quest for the title. He goes up against the Australian player Justin Thompson, who won a preliminary round match on Saturday, which he hopes will give him something of an advantage. We then go back to the preliminary round to see if the American qualifier Joe Chaney can pick up his first win in this event when he takes on Ben Hazel for the fright to go up against Gary Robson in the main draw.

We then move across to the ladies tournament for the third match of the afternoon. This event was kicked into life nicely by Beau Greaves on Saturday and Aileen de Graaf will look to lay down her title credentials in this afternoon session. She meets debutant Kirsty Hutchinson. The final match of the afternoon sees the former semi-finalist Michael Unterbuchner going up against the Dutch star Willem Mandigers.

Evening Session

The preliminary round forms much of the spotlight in the evening session and it begins with the man who was a shock winner of the Winmau World Masters last year taking to the stage when John O’Shea goes up against the potentially unheralded Andreas Harrysson with the number one seed Wesley Harms waiting for the winner. We then have a women’s match between Deta Hedman and Laura Turner which is full of intrigue, with Corrine Hammond the prize for the winner in the quarter final.

The second half of the evening begins with another preliminary round match as the extremely experienced Paul Hogan is back on the big stage. He will go up against the Belgian youngster Brian Raman for the right to meet Adam Smith-Neale in the main draw later in the week. The action on the second day concludes with a battle of the Dutchmen as Martijn Kleermaker will look to cap off his good season with a decent run, which he hopes will begin when he meets the former PDC player Gino Vos.

Betting

I’m going with just the one bet over the course of Sunday which once again comes in the evening session where I suspect the opening match could be much closer than the odds suggest as John O’Shea takes on Andreas Harrysson. O’Shea had the weekend of his life in winning the World Masters but he went there heavily under the radar and with no expectation on his shoulders but that is completely the opposite to what he is here.

There is pressure on him to deliver now and when you consider there was little to suggest he was capable of taking down such a big tournament in the first place, I suspect the odds and expectation might have gone too much towards him. Harrysson has been mixing it at a decent level on the PDC Scandinavian circuit and had one or two decent results when he attempted to get his tour card last year. I think this match is much more even than the odds suggest so I’m happy to be on the Swede to at least force a decider if not win.

Tips
