2020 BDO World Championship Darts – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The first round of the men’s draw concludes at the BDO World Darts Championship on Tuesday and the women’s first round continues on another packed day of action inside the new venue for the event – the Indigo at the o2 in London.

We saw some brilliant darts on Monday evening and with two sessions of action to come on Tuesday, with some big names on show, we should be treated to another wonderful day of darts on the oche.

Afternoon Session

The action gets underway with a clash between two Englishmen as the number 14 seed David Evans goes up against the preliminary round winner Nick Fullwell in what looks like a decent way to get things up and running. The popular Welshman, Nick Kenny then takes to the stage looking to deliver the goods when he faces the Dutch player Dennie Olde Kalter in a match the sixth seed should win but he’ll know only too well his record in this tournament isn’t the greatest.

The women’s draw takes centre stage in the third match of the afternoon when the former champion Anastasia Dombromyslova takes to the oche to go up against Sharon Prins, who is no stranger to this tournament but whose record in it is indifferent to say the least. The final match of the afternoon looks a cracker as Richard Veenstra goes up against Justin Hood, who is another player who looked decent in the preliminary round earlier in the week.

Evening Session

The veteran Gary Robson is the man who will kick off a packed evening session when he goes up against another player who has come through the preliminary round in Ben Hazel before the former women’s champion and favourite for the ladies event Lisa Ashton takes to the stage for the first time this week. She faces Paula Jacklin who has had a little bit too much to say for herself on social media leading up to this match.

The big eagerly awaited clash of the first round is the penultimate match of the day when the 2015 winner Scott Mitchell goes up against the hottest thing in youth darts right now in Leighton Bennett in what should be a great match, with all eyes on the 14-year-old to see if the hype is justified. The final match of the first round sees Scotland’s number one Ryan Hogarth taking on the man who took care of the other Scottish player in the tournament in the preliminary round in the talented French player Thibault Tricole.

Betting

I like two bets on Tuesday and they both come in the men’s draw. The first of them is on Justin Hood to at least force a deciding set against Richard Veenstra. I’ll be interested to see how Veenstra goes here. He has a wonderful record in this tournament and is well regarded in the BDO but his last TV appearance at the Grand Slam was shocking and there is a lot of pressure on him here. That will be added to by the quality of the game of Hood. We knew he was a decent player by virtue of the fact he took care of Jeff Smith in qualifying but the way he powered through his preliminary round match was very encouraging. It might be that experience at this level gets Veenstra through but every preliminary round winner so far has improved for the run in the first round. If that happens here Hood can take the Dutch star to a deciding set if he doesn’t beat him.

It is never easy to have to watch a tournament and be the last man to get onto the stage and that is the fate that has befallen Ryan Hogarth. That is probably the last thing he needed too with memories of a terrible debut in this event last year still in his mind. I think the Scot is vulnerable here with Thibault Tricole having had a match on the new stage and one in which he took the best that Ross Montgomery had to offer, weathered the storm and held his nerve in a lengthy deciding set. Players draw a heck of a lot of confidence from that sort of thing and as I said above we’ve seen every preliminary round winner up their game in the first round. That makes the French ace look a good thing to me here.
