We move into the second round of the BDO World Darts Championship inside the Indigo at the o2 on Wednesday while the first round of the women’s draw comes to a close on what looks like another good day of action in the tournament.
We have seen all the men in action in the competition now and with the format increasing the quality should go up another notch as well and after Wednesday the same can be said about seeing all the women too as we head into the second half of the week.
Afternoon Session
The second round in the men’s draw gets underway with two players who know their way around a big stage meeting when the Wales international Wayne Warren takes on the former PDC world finalist Andy Hamilton in what should be a cracking way to begin play for another day. They are followed by the two remaining women to get their campaigns underway as the beaten finalist from last year, Lorraine Winstanley, takes on Casey Gallagher in an appealing match.
There are only three matches in the afternoon session now, with the format for the men lengthening to ensure that the tournament runs to time. The last game of the afternoon gives two unfancied players the chance to make it into the quarter final when Chris Landman goes up against Ben Hazel, with the prize for the winner being a last eight clash against the winner of the first match of the afternoon on Friday.
Evening Session
It is the men’s draw all the way in the evening session on Wednesday and we have quality everywhere you look over what should be a wonderful few hours of darts. The first match on the stage sees the number one seed Wesley Harms, who seemed to go under the radar with a solid performance in his opening game, taking on the twice winner of this event in Scott Waites for a place in the last eight.
It could be that the match of the day comes in the second match of the night as the former champion Scott Mitchell is back on the big stage. He takes on the classy German player Michael Unterbuchner for a spot in another quarter final. A wonderful day of action concludes with the third seed Richard Veenstra taking on David Evans for a spot in the last eight, in another match which offers plenty of promise.
Betting
There are some juicy battles to watch over the course of the day here but I’m not so sure there are as many betting opportunities. When I saw the card I was looking at Wesley Harms but he is probably only a fair price around the 8/11 mark rather than anything I want to get stuck into. I was hoping we’d get a bigger price Wayne Warren but I’m on him outright so I can live with just letting him win. It wasn’t the best day for me on Tuesday so I’ll attempt to regain some momentum with one for Wednesday.
I like Michael Unterbuchner to beat Scott Mitchell. Mitchell is regarded as one of the best players in the BDO but he plays near enough the whole circuit and has only made one final since February which suggests his form could be better. He won this title in 2015 but hasn’t completely convinced me either side of that. He has reached the quarter finals twice since then but last year in this round he faced Krzysztof Kciuk who averaged 81.78 in a 4-0 defeat to Scotty Dog in what was something close to a bye for the Dorset man. Unterbuchner is better than that. A lot better actually and with him likely to keep up with Mitchell in the scoring department, if not possibly shade him, and the German being one of the better finishers in the BDO, I suspect the even money on him to see off Mitchell is a shade too big. I’ll take Unterbuchner to come through this one.
