2020 Cambridgeshire Handicap – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

There is another high profile day of racing taking place across the UK and Ireland on Saturday with plenty of meetings for us to enjoy, the pick of which is at headquarters where the Cambridgeshire Handicap is the centre of attention.

Although there are plenty of meetings to get stuck into, our betting comes in that big race at Newmarket in what is likely to be something of a cavalry charge. Here is our full preview of the race and our selections.

Always one of the most competitive handicaps of the year, it’s the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket over 9 furlongs.  This year there are 29 runners going to post so first we need to narrow down the field.  It’s typically a race for the younger, progressive types and, recently, the draw has been all important with a stall 20 or higher a big advantage.  The pace this year all looks high so that adds to the potential draw bias and some of the big trainers have also come out to say as such.  There are a number from the high stalls that appeal including Al Rufaa from the Gosden/Dettori combo that has won this race for the past 2 years.    However, there are a few that hold more solid claims & with bookies paying up to 7 places, I’m happy to side with 3 against the field.

Betting

The first selection is the current favourite Tempus.  I’m not normally a favourite backer in these races but this horse is hard to oppose here.  Lightly raced with just 6 starts to his name, he’s looked the potential Group horse in a handicap this term.  First up he was awarded the race in the stewards room at Newbury before winning impressively last time at Ascot.  He looked a horse to follow and with a revised mark just 4lb higher, a good draw & plenty of untapped potential, he’s certain to finish in the frame

Bell Rock is another 4 year old & he has just 1 extra race against his name having seen the track just 7 times.  After being campaigned in pattern class last year, he’s faced 3 handicaps this term & performed with credit in each of them.  Winning here on his reappearance, he then ran well when 6th in the Royal Hunt Cup before finishing 3rd in a hot Glorious Goodwood handicap, both off this mark.  He was in front of some of this field that day including Derevo who goes off at half the price and, with the yard in form, the champ on board & another with a good draw, he looks primed for a big run.

Our final bet is Lucander, a 3 year old we backed when winning last time out at York over 10 furlongs.  He’s won 4 from 7 starts & has done very little wrong this season.  A neck 3rd on reappearance, he then raced on the wrong side of the track at Newmarket before putting it right in a big field at York, travelling the best for much of the race.  He’s been put up just 4lbs for that & could easily double up especially with his yard in the best possible form (3 winners from 5 on Friday).
