2020 Celtic Classic Golf – Final Round Tips and Betting Preview

The fourth champion on the UK Swing will be crowned on Sunday when the final round of the Celtic Classic is played out on the Twnety Ten course at Celtic Manor just outside of Cardiff, on what could be a big day for someone.

The head of the leaderboard is mixed with past winners on the European Tour and rookies looking to taste success for the first time and on an iconic golf course like this that means we are all set up for a wonderful conclusion to the event.

Round 3 Recap

At the end of the third round it is Connor Syme who holds a one stroke lead as he bids to break his duck on the European Tour. He leads by one on 15 under from the second round leader Sam Horsfield who is at 14 under. Omega European Masters champion Sebastian Soderberg is another shot back on 13 under with Andrew Johnston joined by Thomas Detry and Adrian Meronk on 12 under. Thomas Pieters and Callum Shinkwin make up the remainder of the list of players within four of the lead.

It wasn’t a great day for us betting wise with our two ball bet on Guido Migliozzi failing when he was edged out by a shot by Jordan Smith although in truth that was the closest he was to him at any stage on the back nine. We were getting something going in the outright betting with Adrian Otaegui making a move but a bogey on the final hole means we need a big Sunday just for him to get a place now.

Sunday Betting

We have the outright market to go at on Sunday and I have to say I’m extremely tempted to get involved in it because although Otaegui might place he will need a pretty special round in order to do it. The thing that is tempting me in is that we have a player who hasn’t won at this level in the lead and one not much more experienced in second while many of the chasing pack are yet to win at this level as well. Amazingly only three men are single figures in the outright market so I can’t resist another dabble on it.

The player I like is Sebastian Soderberg who I think has a lot going for him. Firstly he can get it out there off the tee and that is likely to be a necessity with the course playing pretty soft after the rain. The other thing I like about him is that he is one of just three players in the top six who have won a title. One of those is Horsfield who won just two weeks ago so it isn’t like he’s an established winner just yet. Soderberg won the European Masters last year shooting 66 in the final round so while some around him might struggle under pressure, that isn’t likely to happen to the Swede. At 12/1 he’s worth a Sunday dabble.

Sunday 2 Balls

As with Saturday, the field goes out in two balls on Sunday with the leading pair of Connor Syme and Sam Horsfield going off at 14.45 BST and the penultimate group onto the course out at 14.35 BST as Sebastian Soderberg and Adrian Meronk embark on the last leg of their journey. Andrew Johnston and Thomas Detry are out in the group before those and it is that group which is the one that forms my bet from those two balls that have been priced up.

Andrew Johnston vs Thomas Detry

Match tees off at 14.25 BST

Two men who will feel they are well in with a chance of winning the tournament go out in the third last group when Andrew Johnston, a former winner at Valderrama of all places, goes out alongside the talented Thomas Detry who is yet to win on the European Tour.

Saturday was a weird day for Johnston. He didn’t have his best long game with him and it is that which he is renowned for within his game. What he isn’t necessarily known for is his putting and that was actually crash hot, so if he can keep the putting strong you would think he is unlikely to put in two bad ball striking rounds. Even if he does he might have the edge on the Belgian who to my eyes clearly has an issue when he is in contention on Sunday. There have been a few occasions this season when he has buckled when the winning line has been in sight and that is a concern for me. He did shoot 66 in the final round of the Hero Open but Horsfield had opened up a huge lead in that so even then I doubt Detry thought he was playing to win. Johnston is the more convincing of these two and I’m happy to take him to deliver the goods out of this pairing on Sunday.
