We move into the second half of the Celtic Classic on Saturday, when the 75 players who made the cut embark onto the Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor on what is traditionally termed ‘Moving Day’, the 18 holes where the players look to position themselves strongly heading into pay day on Sunday.
We have some of the bigger names who entered the tournament up towards the business end of proceedings at the halfway mark, so on a course that is in great condition we should get an excellent third day of action.
Round 2 Recap
After 36 holes of this tournament it is Sam Horsfield who holds a one shot lead, with the Hero Open winner looking to follow it up with another win on the UK Swing two weeks later. He’ll be chased down by some top talent not least the man he will share the third round with in Thomas Pieters, who is a shot back on 10 under. Three men are another shot back on nine under including Pieters’ World Cup winning partner Thomas Detry along with Andrew Johnston and Callum Shinkwin. Another quartet were a shot further back on eight under.
It was a good start to the week for us betting wise but we were unable to capitalise on that on Friday as Edoardo Molinari had a poor round of golf and was no match for either of his playing partners it has to be said. The Italian was unable to use his experience and actually it was Lucas Bjerregaard who despite having no chance of making the cut was able to shoot the best round. The lack of pressure on him probably helped.

Saturday Betting
Most of the markets are dominated by Sam Horsfield and Thomas Pieters and that is completely understandable. At this stage you would probably want to be on one of them to win the tournament and certainly on one of them to lead after the third round, however there is the off chance that they are not on top of their games and one brings the other down. The only problem with that is I don’t have a lot of faith in the real close up chasers and the others might be too far back to overhaul them over 18 holes. Adrian Otaegui has fired himself close enough to the lead to give us chances of a return over the weekend so I’ll sit on my hands and watch him hopefully get further into contention.
Saturday 2 Balls
The tournament will be played out in two balls from here on in weather permitting. That means the final group out onto the golf course will be the one with the aforementioned Sam Horsfield and Thomas Pieters. They will go out at 14.50 BST while the English pair of Andrew Johnston and Callum Shinkwin will go out 10 minutes before them. The first tee time is 08.25 BST so there are over six hours of players all teeing off from the first hole, and the last dozen or so groups have all been priced up for us to have a bang on. I’ll go with one of those.
Jordan Smith vs Guido Migliozzi
Match tees off at 13.25 BST
Two men who will tee off on six under, five off the lead but still in with every chance of being a factor down the stretch on Sunday partner each other onto the golf course when Jordan Smith and Guido Migliozzi partner each other.
Smith is a favourite for this two ball and I understand why based on reputation but it is how they’ve played this week which is all I’m interested in. When you look at strokes gained this week, the Italian actually shows a stronger game than his leaderboard position suggests. Had it not been for a cold putter on Friday he could be a lot deeper in contention. He is ninth in strokes gained tee to green and seventh on approach but needs to go better on the greens. In contrast to that, Smith doesn’t rank any higher than 27 for any of the strokes gained categories. That means his all-round game is steady and consistent rather than special. If Migliozzi can just get his putter to cooperate he could see off Smith are a decent price.
