2020 MLS is Back Tournament – Friday 17th July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The MLS is Back tournament continues on Friday night with three more fixtures including the first time since the restart that two encounters have taken place at the same time, as the second set of group matches continue at a pace.

Group C and D are under the microscope over the course of Friday night with some big sides looking for three regular season points and the chance to enhance their credentials of moving forward in this competition. Two of the three matches are live on TV in the UK with the other available at betting sites.

Sporting Kansas City vs Colorado Rapids (01.00 – Free Sports)

The first of the two televised matches on Friday night sees Sporting Kansas City taking on the Colorado Rapids in a match which is a big game for both after they were both beaten in their first games back from lockdown.

Sporting Kansas City looked to be heading to a fine win in their first match against Minnesota United but their goalkeeper being sent off completely changed the game and Minnesota turned it late on to steal three points. Colorado Rapids weren’t really ever at the races in a disappointing defeat, albeit against a decent enough Real Salt Lake side, who might just be underestimated both at this tournament and the season ahead. These two sides both looked poor on their first outings and this replacement SKC keeper looked an accident waiting to happen so I certainly couldn’t back them but I’m in no rush to take Colorado either.

DC United vs New England Revolution (01.00)

The one match from the Eastern Conference sees Group C catch up to date on Friday night when DC United take on the New England Revolution in a clash between two sides who picked up points in their opening encounter and as such will go through to the knockout stage with a win here.

DC United looked like they were on for a bit of a hiding from Toronto FC in their opening match but quite incredibly they found their groove very late on and turned a 2-0 deficit with 10 men into a 2-2 draw which should have really boosted their confidence. New England won their opening match against a Montreal Impact side who got it all wrong and got nothing going at any stage of the evening. I’m not really sure what I made of these two sides in their opening matches so I’ll take another watching brief on them and sit this one out.

Real Salt Lake vs Minnesota United (03.30 – Free Sports)

The final match of the day is the only one which sees two winners from the first round of games in action when Real Salt Lake take on Minnesota United in what could end up being a key game when we look back on the Western Conference at the end of the season.

There was a bit of an assurance about Real Salt Lake in their opening match, a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rapids and the confidence they will take from beating their rivals will boost them going in here. Minnesota weren’t at the races as they came to terms with the late withdrawal of Luis Amarilla which meant an alteration to their plans. You could tell that was the case with their play against Sporting Kansas City in their opening match but to their credit they kept plugging away and picked up a late win.

Despite the absence of Amarilla, I think there are goals in both these sides. While the asence of Amarilla doesn’t do a whole lot for the goal potential, Minnesota being without Ike Opara and Ozzy Alonso is very much a help. Real Salt Lake attacked in numbers against Colorado but they didn’t look completely tight at the back. I like the idea of over 2.5 goals here in a match between two underrated teams.
