2020 MLS is Back Tournament – Sunday 26th July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The round of 16 matches at the MLS is Back tournament continue on Sunday when two more games take place down in Orlando. By the time the night is over we will know half of the line up for the quarter finals.

We’ve already seen Philadelphia Union and Orlando City make it through to the last eight and on Sunday evening two more Eastern Conference sides will look to join them, as well as a couple from the Western Conference.

The Format

The 26 MLS teams have now become 24 with FC Dallas and Nashville being withdrawn from the tournament after positive Covid tests. The remaining teams have been placed into six groups of four. Each team plays the other three in their group once in the group stage. The results of these matches not only count in this tournament but also towards the regular season when it resumes. At the end of the group stage the top two from each group and the four best third placed finishers go into a 16-team knockout stage. The entire tournament takes place in Orlando with the final scheduled for August 11. There is a Champions League place for the winners which should ensure it is competitive.

Where to watch

Both matches are live on TV in the UK. They can both be seen on Free Sports. They will also be available to be watched on the live streaming consoles on bookmaker websites.

Toronto FC vs New York City FC (01.30)

The opening match of the night is the one between two Eastern Conference powerhouses when Toronto FC take on New York City FC in a clash which has plenty of history in it, and most of it is good for the neutrals as sparks tend to fly when these two get together.

We’ve seen two very different teams in this tournament. Toronto FC have been attack minded and vibrant although shaky in defence whereas New York City FC have lacked fluency going forward and have been no better than hit and miss defensively. They qualified as the worst of the third placed teams and while that doesn’t always matter when you get to the knockout stage, the fact they came third in a group they would have been expected to dominate highlights plenty of concerns.

I’m actually quite surprised that Toronto FC are the outsiders in this match. Although they leaked a few earlier in the tournament, two of those were penalties so their goals against category probably doesn’t reflect their performances. Their goals for one definitely does and so on the draw no bet market Toronto FC look a good thing to me.

Sporting Kansas City vs Vancouver Whitecaps (04.00)

The second match of the night sees the two teams from the Western Conference battling it out when Sporting Kansas City look to move into the quarter finals of the competition when they take on a Vancouver Whitecaps side who made their way through to this stage through the back door.

The Whitecaps beat the lightning and the Chicago Fire to come through as one of the best third placed teams but you would be pushing the boundaries of the truth scale to suggest that they looked much cop in doing so. Sporting Kansas City have looked much more assured in this tournament and there is little doubt that they are the better of the two teams but that is all reflected in the odds. I expect a Kansas City win but the better bet comes in the first game so I’m happy to leave this one alone.
