The second day of the MLS is Back tournament sees two matches being played as four Eastern Conference sides get their campaign back underway on what should be a very competitive day out in Florida.
We have one match from Group A and then the opener from Group C and with only three group matches and MLS regular season points on the line there is a lot to play for. Both matches are live on TV in the UK so there is no need to miss any of the action.
The Format
The 26 MLS teams have already become 25 with FC Dallas being withdrawn from the tournament after 10 positive Covid tests. The remaining teams have been placed into six groups of four with Group A having six teams. Each team plays the other three in their group once in the group stage. The results of these matches not only count in this tournament but also towards the regular season when it resumes. Teams in Group A play three other teams in that group not all 5. At the end of the group stage the top three from Group A and top two from the other five groups progress to a knockout phase and are joined by the three highest teams yet to progress who have the highest number of points. The entire tournament takes place in Orlando with the final scheduled for August 11. There is a Champions League place for the winners which should ensure it is competitive.

New York City FC vs Philadelphia Union (14.00 – Sky Football)
The opening match of the day comes from Group A where the Eastern Conference table toppers from last season, New York City FC, take on Philadelphia Union in a battle of two play-off teams from last term.
These two will know that they are in the biggest group so their path through to the next round is a little easier but they will still want to be on it from the start to make up for difficult starts to the regular season. New York City FC were beaten in both their matches while Philadelphia Union needed one of the best goals we’ll see in this MLS season to pick up the only point they have to their name. I’m expecting a good match here but I just want to see how conditions are in these 9am local time matches before I get involved in them.
Montreal Impact vs New England Revolution (01.00 – Free Sports)
The second match of the day is the opener in Group C as Champions League quarter finalists Montreal Impact take on New England Revolution in what is a second meeting of the season between the two after they opened up the regular season against each other.
The Impact won that match 2-1 when many expected the Revolution to get the better of them and to be fair to the Canadian outfit, they were going great guns when the stoppage came along. Thierry Henry had got his side through in the Champions League and they have picked up four points from their two matches to date. New England had some key injuries for that season opener but they look to be back now so we should get a better performance from them.
I like the idea of goals in this match. This is a tough group and both sides will be well aware of that and so I expect them to set up to win the game. There was more fluency to the Impact attack under Henry and I expect that to continue here. The Revs have their star playmaker Carles Gil back to pull the strings and that is big. I’ll go with over 2.5 goals in this one.
