2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Monday 18th May Group 1 Tips and Betting Preview

Another week of Icons of Darts action brought to us from the Modus Darts team begins on Monday as we get another day of darting entertainment from seven players in their own homes, for us to enjoy during this ongoing lockdown period.

After some tight and competitive groups last week we have five players who had the majority of last week off either making their debut in the competition or returning to it. We also have a couple of players carrying on and looking to do the business.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Saturday Recap

In a group where everyone picked up a couple of wins at least, it was a third successive group win for David Evans on Saturday even though he only won four of his six games. He topped the table on leg difference from Arron Monk to go undefeated in group tables for the week. Scott Mitchell and Adam Huckvale both picked up three wins, as did Darryl Fitton who looked odds on to win the group having won his opening three matches but he couldn’t find another win and had to settle for fifth. Wessel Nijman and Paul Nicholson went into a week off with a pair of victories.

Unfortunately it wasn’t a great end to the week for us from a betting point of view as Wessel Nijman never really got going and he actually lost to Paul Nicholson so was never in with a chance of covering the handicap that we expected him to. That made it a pretty poor week overall and gives us some making up to do this week.

Monday Line Up

We have two players from last week in the field of play in the first pool of players this time around. They are the winner from Friday in Boris Koltsov and the player who finished third with four wins on the same day in Fallon Sherrock. They will go up against a player who has been a regular in the Modus leagues for much of their existence in Jarred Cole, who actually featured in place of Sherrock on the opening day last week.

Three more men in the field are pretty well-known to us after six or seven weeks of action. Ritchie Edhouse has played in the Icons of Darts and the A Night At The Darts and he is back for more this week. Jose Justicia and Mike Warburton have been featuring for at least a couple of the weeks too. We also have one debutant in the field in the shape of the Challenge Tour player Scott Marsh, who will be looking to showcase his talents in a field full of competitors at the secondary PDC level.

Outright Betting

On the face of it you would have to say that this looks a wide open group. Jarred Cole and Boris Koltsov are the favoured players with the bookmakers and experience probably determines that is correct but neither of them are bulletproof it has to be said. Ritchie Edhouse is third in the betting but you’ll have coronary issues in no time when it comes to relying on him to hit the doubles so I’m keen to look elsewhere on the opening day of the week.

I’ve a feeling Fallon Sherrock is going to take down one of these soon. She is circling nicely but too often these second phase groups have been decided on leg difference and a lot of her wins are close wins which go against her. Jose Justicia and Mike Warburton have had a good day each in the past but I’ll plump for Scott Marsh here. We’ll get the negative of it being his debut out of the way first. It is a negative, there is no hiding from that, but it isn’t like he is definitely going to have to win all six games. Marsh has been competing on the Challenge Tour and fared well in the first two events, having decent runs and throwing 90+ averages for fun. There’s a lot of poor finishers in this group and a couple of indifferent scorers too. If it all comes together for Marsh he’s better than a 16/1 poke in this company.

Match Betting

I’ll get the week going with a couple of bets and the first of them comes in the form of a double where both men are overpriced I fancy but rather than take them to win via handicaps and watching them win 4-3 I’ll pair them up at an acceptable price. That is Ritchie Edhouse to beat Jose Justicia and Boris Koltsov to beat Fallon Sherrock. Both men are going to outscore their opponents, I think that is a given, so it comes down to them hitting the doubles. Edhouse and Justicia were in the same group two weeks ago and Edhouse won twice and lost the other 4-3 in what was his final match of a day he was done and dusted in long before then. They meet early doors on Monday so I expect Edhouse to be on it. Koltsov and Sherrock met twice last week and the Russian won on both occasions so if they hit their doubles relatively smoothly they should deliver at a combined 13/10.

The other bet I like on the day is for Jarred Cole to beat Ritchie Edhouse. These two have met on seven previous occasions in the various Modus leagues and formats and it is 5-2 to Cole and on each occasion he has outscored Edhouse, which actually is the strong part of Edhouse’s game. The two defeats Cole has had mares on the doubles. We know Cole is going to be involved in the overall reckoning when they meet on Monday because this will be just his third game whereas it is the penultimate one for Edhouse so his day might effectively be done from a competitive standpoint. The past few weeks have shown Cole to be the better player and as long as he doesn’t go doolally on his doubling he should come out on top here.
