2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Monday 27th July Group 1 Tips and Betting Preview

After a wonderful World Matchplay tournament, the Icons of Darts is back on Monday as the team at Modus Darts bring us another week of competitive darting action to fill the void while we wait for the return of the Premier League.

Everything remains the same as it did heading into the Matchplay, so we have two pools of players playing alternative days for some competitive practice for themselves and some added entertainment for us.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Line Up

You have to say the cast for Monday is not as strong as the one for Tuesday but despite that the majority of them are at the same level so there should still be some competitive action. Scott Marsh is the man expected to come out on top in this group after enjoying himself the last time he was in action. There is also a return to the Icons of Darts for Fallon Sherrock after a month away from the competition. Keelan Kay won the last group he took part in and he is also in this group.

The other three men all have a bit to prove based on what we’ve seen from them recently. Diogo Portela is probably the pick of the three but he hasn’t finished better than fourth in his last three group outings. Jose Justicia keeps getting entered into this competition but he has never really shown any sort of form at all and although the results haven’t been good for John Brown, he did last least offer come encouragement last time out.

Outright Betting

I find it hard to see beyond Scott Marsh over the course of the day and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if he did a clean sweep here. Unless Fallon Sherrock starts to show her best over this distance I’m not really seeing anyone who can beat him let alone win the four or five matches it is going to take to deny him the group victory. The fact that Marsh is only 3/1 to win all five of his games kind of says everything about his expected dominance.

The other reason to like Marsh is because he has the early shift and faces two of the three outsiders in the first two matches of the day, so if he can find wins in those he could be away and gone by the time Sherrock comes into proceedings. We shouldn’t ignore Keelan Kay as he won the last group that he competed in but nothing we have seen prior to that suggests that he just had a day out rather than suddenly improved. If Kay is now a genuine competitor then so be it but I don’t think that’s the case. 5/4 on Marsh winning the group looks perfectly acceptable to me.

Match Betting

There isn’t really any prices that stand out to me going into play on Monday so I’m going to leave the match betting alone. I suspect it is going to be tricky all week in this group and if we are going to have bets in it they will have to come in handicaps. That is fine but given that we haven’t seen any of these players in action for the best part of two weeks, I’d rather see who has kept their form over the break and who hasn’t before committing to handicaps.

There are one or two players who could improve and cause issues for the main players and from a match betting standpoint hopefully we get some competitive play so that odds are better for the remainder of the week. If I was betting on the matches here I’d be looking to oppose Fallon Sherrock who just hasn’t shown her best form over this distance, but the fact she’s probably the second best player in the field on paper is a concern. We’ll start the week off with a group bet only.
