2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Thursday 18th June Group 4 Tips and Betting Preview

We are back with the second pool of players for the week in the Icons of Darts competition on Thursday, as six men are again on their home oches to provide us with some darting entertainment while we wait for the circuit to get up and running again.

The standard wasn’t the best in this pool on Tuesday but few could argue against the competitiveness of some of the matches. Hopefully the quality improves but we set that same competitive edge.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Wednesday Recap

We got something of an upset on Wednesday as for the first time in five attempts Martin Adams was not the group winner! That honour went to Boris Koltsov who won four of his five matches to come out on top. He edged out David Evans and Scott Marsh who both picked up three wins each. There were a pair of wins for Adams and for Fallon Sherrock while it was another disappointing day for Dave Parletti, who could only register one win.

It was a first profitable betting day for us in a while in the Modus events. We needed Boris Koltsov to cover a 1.5 leg handicap against Dave Parletti and the Russian duly obliged with an excellent performance and a 5-2 victory. Celebrating 8/11 winners isn’t really our thing but given the insane bad luck we’ve had recently it was certainly warmly received.

Thursday Line Up

Scott Mitchell opened the week in perfect fashion when he won all five matches to claim this group on Tuesday and he will be looking for another strong showing on Thursday when he heads the pool for the second time. Andy Jenkins looked like he was ready to offer a big effort on Tuesday but couldn’t sustain his form throughout the day. If Tuesday was to blow the cobwebs off he will be looking for more on Thursday.

Mark Webster wasn’t at the standard he has shown recently on Tuesday so I’m sure that will spur him on to deliver a better showing here, while Paul Nicholson will be eager to get back among the group winning fraternity. We then have the two new players to the competition, Stephen Burton, who won’t have to do too much more than he did on Tuesday except tidy up on his doubling. John Brown is the other player on show on Thursday.

Outright Betting

I chanced my arm on Andy Jenkins in this pool on Tuesday and two matches into the day I was getting ready to count my chickens but it all went wrong from there. He is a better price here so I probably should be on him again but I just can’t bring myself to part with my hard earned again, especially as we know that Scott Mitchell is going to be a tough nut to crack if he is in the form he showed on Tuesday.

Paul Nicholson looked ominous on Tuesday I must admit. I don’t still trust him to win matches easily enough to win a group on leg difference which I always like to have up my sleeve but he is tempting at 6/1. I wouldn’t completely write off Stephen Burton either at 12/1 and he’s probably the value in the group. I can’t say I’ve got a strong feeling either way though and given that we’re still down for the week I’ll save my money.

Match Betting

I will go with one bet though which is one I was successful with on Tuesday. That sees Paul Nicholson beating Mark Webster. It makes absolutely no sense to me that Webster is going into their matches as the favourite. It has been a long time since he has been the better player of the two regardless of the competition they have been playing in, and he certainly hasn’t been when they’ve met in the Icons of Darts, as I highlighted on Tuesday.

These two men have now met five times in the Icons of Darts, all over this best of nine leg distance, and Nicholson has won all five. He also won their previous three competitive matches on the PDC tour as well so he has an Indian side over the Welshman at present. I’m not surprised by that though because he is very consistent whereas Webster is up and down with a big score cut in half by a poor one and things like that. I’m happy to be on Nicholson at evens in this one.
