2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Tuesday 4th August Group 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The Icons of Darts continues on Tuesday with the second day of action for the week taking place, which sees the other pool of players taking to the live stream for the first time on what should be another decent day of darts.

The competitiveness of this tournament over the last couple of weeks has been very high and with some good players on show on Tuesday, the quality should come close to matching it, so there is a lot of look forward to.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday six players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the six players will play each other once over the best of nine legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Monday Recap

We had a good old scrap for top spot on Monday between the two class acts in the field and it was Martin Adams who came out on top on leg difference from David Evans. That was made all the more remarkable because Evans actually beat Adams 5-2 in their match. Keane Barry came third with three wins while Scott Marsh picked up a couple of wins for fourth spot. Jose Justicia was one off the bottom with one win, with his leg difference being better than that of Diogo Portela who also came away with one victory.

We opened the week with one bet on Monday which was on David Evans to land the ‘King of the Oche’ punt against Diogo Portela. In fairness we got a bit lucky because although Evans won in a deciding leg, the decisive 180 came in that final leg which had Evans not missed a barrel load of darts at double in the previous leg would not even have taken place. Nevertheless, it was a winning start to the week which is never a bad thing.

Tuesday Line Up

We see the second pool of players in action for the first time this week, although in fairness we’ve already seen one of the players as Scott Marsh is playing for the second straight day. That might give him a little bit of an advantage on the rest of the field but he isn’t the favourite for the group. That honour goes to Boris Koltsov, the man who came out on top in his group last Tuesday and will be eyeing up a repeat success of that.

We have a couple of world champions in this pool of players as well. Scott Mitchell was on show last week and will look to find just an ounce more consistency to really threaten top spot. Mark Webster is the other former world champion on show on Tuesday. He competes for the first time since the World Matchplay. Andy Jenkins is also back from his hiatus and the final man in the field is Keelan Kay who is visibly a much better player now than when he joined in with this tournament.

Outright Betting

I’ve been a little reluctant to get involved in the groups in recent times because the quality has been so even and the standard so good. In fairness the same could be said about this group, and it might be that as the week goes on I become less interested in it but at least here on Tuesday there is a price which has caught my eye enough to reel me in, partly because a couple of the ‘middle dangers’ having played for three weeks.

This might be the best time to get on to Scott Mitchell. The former Lakeside champion won three of his five matches on Saturday with one of his losses being to Martin Adams who was on a different planet towards the end of the week and continued that on Monday. There is nothing like Adams in this field so if we upgrade that performance Mitchell could be very competitive here. Koltsov is a worthy favourite but he still isn’t wholly reliable and I can see a bunfight developing for top spot. If there is a concern it is that Mitchell doesn’t always win matches easily but four wins could well be enough here. To balance that out, he has one of the early shifts and it is becoming more apparent that posting a total pays dividends in this. At 4/1 I’ll chance Mitchell to do just that and come away with the win.

Match Betting

I’ll go with one in the match betting department too because I’m keen to take Mark Webster on here. Webster could go one of two ways on his return to the competition. I say that because the last time we saw him he was not at all good. He won one match that day – 5-4 against Andy Jenkins but how he won that with 5/30 on the doubles I’ll never know. It is his averages and the two 5-0 beatings by Ritchie Edhouse and David Evans that was more of a concern.

On that day Webster’s averages were 77.21, 82.43, 73.41, 82.70 and 84.17. He was 9/51 on his doubles for the day and those kind of things can linger. It might be that the break has refreshed him but there is no guarantee of that. One thing that can be guaranteed is Boris Koltsov is nicely warm to the task after a good effort last week, will score big so Webster isn’t going to have an easy time on his doubles, and should have the confidence to get the job done here. Webster will have played three matches before this one and if he has copped a couple of heavy defeats his motivation could be low. I’ll go with the Russian to win this and cover the 1.5 leg handicap.
