2020 PDC Home Tour III – Group 8 Tips and Betting Preview

The Grand Slam of Darts might be in progress but that doesn’t stop the PDC Home Tour III from returning with another group on Monday as seven players will load up their cameras and take to their home oches for a day of action.

The idea is to pick up as many points as a player can and that is put towards the overall table which is becoming a little more significant as we approach the halfway mark of the opening part of the competition.

The Format

42 players will compete in PDC Home Tour III and they will all compete in three of the 18 groups in the first round where their results will be accumulated on one overall league table where the top seven at the end of the initial 18 days of action will form a Championship Group from which the overall champion will be crowned. All matches are the best of seven legs and the tournament will be broadcast on PDC.tv or the bookmaker streaming sites.

Group 8 Line Up

The Favourites

Kim Huybrechts has been pretty active recently having competed in the World Cup not so long ago and he is the headline act and the favourite to win the group on Monday. He isn’t the highest ranked player on show though. In fact he is only the third highest with Steve Beaton and John Henderson both above him in the rankings. Henderson was also at the World Cup and it will be interesting to see if they have an advantage on the rest. William Borland is the other player in the group who is a single figure price to win it.

The Outsiders

Home Tour regular Carl Wilkinson is one of the players who will be considered an outsider to win this group but he has won previous groups in the past Home Tours so it shouldn’t be beyond him to do it again. In terms of the betting the other two players do appear to be making up the numbers somewhat. They are Steve Brown, who on his day could give one or two of these a run for his money, and Harald Leitinger who does look like he has it all to go to come through with numerous wins here.

Group Betting

I haven’t been a fan of betting on the groups in this tournament and that isn’t changing on Monday. I’ve actually noticed that the trend is for the experienced or better players to get on an early roll and never look back in this particular format but I’m acutely aware that we haven’t had the Home Tour for a while so there might be an element of lottery or the unknown about what we can expect to see over the course of Monday.

If I was betting on the group I might take the chance on Carl Wilkinson. He finished level on points with Chris Dobey in the one group he has played so far this season and his five wins means that he has all the motivation needed to have a big day here. I just have my doubts that he can overcome all the three fancied runners. Steve Beaton also has five wins from his first group so he is in the same boat but at 3/1 I’m certainly not wanting to back him. I’ll sit this group out.

Match Betting

I will side with Carl Wilkinson in one of his matches on Monday though and that is the one against John Henderson who I’m not completely convinced the format will suit. To be fair to Hendo he had a taste of best of seven action at the World Cup but he didn’t play anything like he can. His scoring was off and his finishing was quite average too. He took that form into the Winter Series where he won just one match in the five tournaments which suggests he is struggling a little.

Wilkinson had some poor results in the Winter Series as well but you would expect those more from someone who is ranked as lowly as he is in the game. Where he hasn’t had many poor results is in the Home Tour where in his first group in this campaign he saw off the likes of Chris Dobey and Geert Nentjes among others and only lost to an Andy Hamilton who is bang in form again. Wilkinson has a good record in the Home Tour and perhaps more importantly he has the throw in this match so at odds against he looks an acceptable bet against a bang out of form Henderson.
