2020 PDC World Darts Championship – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The last night of darts action of 2019 sees the two semi-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship taking place inside Alexandra Palace on what promises to be an absolute belter of a night of arrers with four men competing to start 2020 in the final of the competition.

We have the top two players in the world and two men who are more than capable of landing this title on show on Monday evening with players looking to get to the six set number that will see them challenging for the title on Wednesday night.

Peter Wright vs Gerwyn Price

The first semi-final of the tournament is a repeat of the Grand Slam final from earlier in the year as Peter Wright takes on Gerwyn Price in what should be an epic contest for the first spot in the title showdown in the New Year.

Wright was indifferent in his first match but he has been close to immaculate since then and if he is getting better as the tournament goes on we should see something quite special from ‘Snakebite’. Price hasn’t been quite as good as Wright over the last few rounds, numerically at least, but he has seen off three good opponents without being troubled and you can never criticise a man for doing that. He has looked a lot more confident here than he has done in the past.

There is nothing between these two, but given that Wright has put up the slightly better numbers in the tournament and is strong odds against to win the match I think he is the value to come out on top here. Another bet for this semi-final is for Wright to hit more than 11.5 180s. He has hit a dozen 180s in six sets and eight sets in his last two matches and you’ve got to think this one is going at least nine or 10 sets so he can reach a dozen again.

Michael van Gerwen vs Nathan Aspinall

After the first semi-final concludes the second one will take place when Michael van Gerwen looks to take his title defence to the final match when he takes on a Nathan Aspinall who is in the semi-final of the tournament for the second year in succession, and is looking to go at least one better than he did last year.

I don’t think we’ve seen van Gerwen at his best in this event. Whether that is because his draw has been so kind that he hasn’t needed to be or whether he just isn’t at his best I’m not sure but he’ll need his best display so far to win here. Aspinall began the tournament slowly, I guess with a few nerves and doubts over whether last year was a fluke or not, but as the competition has gone on, he has warmed to the task nicely and has played some of his best darts in overcoming Gary Anderson and Dimitri Van den Bergh in the last two rounds.

These two have met on four previous occasions and they are 2-2 in their career. Aspinall’s wins have been 6-1 and 6-3 so he clearly doesn’t fear van Gerwen which makes for a great semi-final. It also makes me think that Aspinall can remain within 3.5 sets of the great Dutchman which is the handicap line. He picked up three sets in the semi-final last year and I think he can get at least that many here.
