2020 Preakness Stakes – Big Race Tips and Betting Preview

While we wait for the big race in France on Sunday our attentions turn to the States where the eyes of the world focus in for latest leg of the Triple Crown is run when the Preakness Stakes takes place at Pimlico on Saturday evening. The big prize is not up for grabs but the race is still a big one.

We have had some good success Stateside in recent years and after tipping up the winner of the Kentucky Derby we are looking to follow up with another in the next leg of the Triple Crown. We’re going with two against the field.

Preview

In this, the strangest of years, the traditional 2nd leg of the American Triple Crown normally scheduled for May now becomes the 3rd & final leg, run in October.  It’s the 145th running of the Preakness & we have a field of 11 with no Triple Crown up for grabs because, after winning the Belmont in style, Kentucky Derby favourite Tiz The Law was upset by Authentic.  There’s a relatively small field of 11 including Authentic, with Tiz The Law choosing to sit this one out & wait for the Breeders Cup.

Favourites

Authentic is the favourite here & really has done nothing wrong.  He won the Kentucky Derby in good style, going from the front & quickening when pressed off the home turn.  Maybe that was his day & he looks short in the betting especially with Art Collector now fit & ready to take his chance.  He was well fancied for that race before being pulled out due to a minor foot injury.  He’s 4 from 4 this term &, if fully fit, should be a massive danger but it’s interesting that he’s yet to win a Grade 1.  Only 5 fillies have ever run this race which puts me off Swiss Skydiver &, whilst having a great campaign, it’s been a busy one & the mileage may take its toll.   Thousand Words is Bob Baffert’s second string but of more concern is his inconsistency.  At the prices, he cannot be fancied.  Mr Big News was 3rd in the Kentucky Derby pulling out a career best but did have the run of the race there.  He isn’t sure to back it up.

Betting

At bigger odds. I like Max Player who is one of 3 for Steve Asmussen.  He’s the only horse in this field who will have run in all 3 of the Triple Crown races & he deserves a bit of luck.  He was 3rd behind Tiz The Law in the Belmont & then was 5th in the Kentucky Derby but had excuses.  He broke slowly from the inside gate, faced a load of kickback & ultimately got too far back.  Once in the clear, he made eyecatching late progress and, if as expected he races closer to the pace in this smaller field, he’ll be the one closing all the way to the line.

The other I cannot leave out is Kentucky Derby 8th Ny Traffic.  He ran no sort of race there with his jockey seemingly not up for it & the horse swerving out of the stalls, having too much use made of him early & then fading at the business end.  Ignore that run & he’d have every chance.  2nd to the brilliant Maxfield in the Matt Winn, he was then just a nose 2nd in the Haskell to today’s favourite, Authentic.   Taking that form literally, he’s massively overpriced & with reports coming out that he’s worked well this week, I’m happy to be on each way.
